The Boston Red Sox may have posted the top bid for the right to negotiate with Japanese right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported, citing Major League Baseball sources.

There has been no official announcement, and the Seibu Lions, Matsuzaka's team in Japan, have until Tuesday to accept or reject the high bid.

But Olney is reporting that the Red Sox may have posted the top bid with a figure between $38 million and $45 million, according to Major League Baseball officials who are monitoring the bidding.

Matsuzaka, who pitched for Japan's World Baseball Classic champions, is considered among the top prospects available this offseason. If the Lions accept the top bid, the winning bidder has 30 days to reach an agreement with Matsuzaka. If a deal cannot be reached, he would return to the Lions for the 2007 season and become a free agent in the spring of 2008.

By 5 p.m. Wednesday, major league teams interested in bidding on the rights to deal with Matsuzaka had to post a sealed bid. Major League Basball then took the highest bid and forwarded only the dollar figure -- not the identity of the team -- to the Seibu Lions. According to a source within Major League Baseball, as of Friday afternoon, Seibu had not informed MLB officially whether it had accepted the bid.

well... it IS buster olney

If the sox dont win this, and I dont think they will, buster olney will have alot of sh^t on his plate, and dont it wont be deserved.

He says in his report "the sox may have had the winning bid". Everyone else has said the same thing, but not from an individual person, about practically every team. I think he said it on the stephen A.smith show lmao. It has blown up, and everyone is reporting it, but not from different sources, its all citing buster olney. Poor guy! hahaha

I wanted matsuzaka but 38-42 million is out of control.

And that is for the right to negotiate for him. Assuming a team negotiates a contract Boras likes, :Cuss: , don't they have to wait 2 years before he comes to the US? Of course that could be waiverable for a fee I imagine.

Hey Foulkie....we might have found a team for ya.

The new hot rumor is that the Pirates won with a winning bid of their whole team.

If this Red Sox rumor is true, its amazing to me that some teams are willing to pay more than the Pirates are spending on their whole current team just to talk to one guy, not even to sign him, just to talk to him.

If the Red Sox really bid 40 million, it was obviously (as I said in THE OTHER MATSUZAKA THREAD) an attempt to block the Yankees from getting him. If the Sox win for that amount, they'll "fail to reach an agreement" with him -- this forces him to play another year in Japan, and Boston will get their bid money back.

So, its not entirely unreasonable maneuver. NOBODY would be dumb enough to actually pay Seibu $40million for this guy. $20mil is a stretch to pay just for the right to sign him...

Boras could go to appeal courts or something similar, and make sure Mats gets to play. Could be the 2nd highest bidder, who knows.

I dont buy that the sox won the bid, but if they did, I doubt it was just to block him from the Yankees.

Not the whole Asian community, he forgot GookBall.

While we're at it, might as well throw out Crackerball or Honkyball or ******ball or dunecoonball...etc etc...

PS. I'd like to apologize to anyone that those retarded words offended, but I'm just making a point that it's pretty retarded to toss out racially insensitive words in a public forum. It might be fun and games when you're using racial slurs when you're within a private group but to use it in an open forum, some one will find it offensive.

While we're talking about it, is anyone here actually offended by the words cracker or honkey? I'm caucasian, and they don't bother me at all, not even a little bit.

But don't knock the crackerball, cause its the ****.

I am highly offended. I'm filing a complaing right this moment.

Easily offended people shouldn't log on to internet forums. Bunch of pansies.

For that kind of money you can keep sushi boy. He may be the next Irabu and we will all laugh. To compare him to Wang who has proven himself in the majors is stupid.

Yanks doubt report

of Daisuke to Sox

BY BILL MADDEN and ANTHONY McCARRON

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS

675-matsuzaka_japan.JPGDaisuke Matsuzaka may not be Boston-bound in spite of report. The last time the Yankees and Red Sox clashed for an international superstar pitcher, the Yanks signed Jose Contreras, leaving Boston executives so frustrated they smashed furniture in their Nicaragua hotel room - depending on who you believe, anyway.

When an Internet report surfaced yesterday that said the Red Sox "may have posted the top bid" for Japanese star Daisuke Matsuzaka, Joe Torre seemed disappointed, but not chair-breakingly so. "We came up short, evidently," Torre said before the gala dinner for his Safe at Home Foundation last night at Chelsea Piers. "It's one of those blind draws you have to deal with."

But other baseball officials, including Yankee GM Brian Cashman, weren't so sure Matsuzaka is Boston-bound. And a Red Sox source last night called the report "premature."

"I don't think anyone knows anything for certain," Cashman said, adding that he hadn't heard anything official from Major League Baseball.

ESPN's Web site, citing major league sources, said the Red Sox bid anywhere from $38 million to $45 million for the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka, who might be the best pitcher ever to come out of Japan. The site also reported that Texas bid $22 million. The Yankees said after Thursday's deadline that they had bid for Matsuzaka.

Red Sox sources, while acknowledging they were in the bidding, said last night they haven't heard from the Seibu Lions, Matsuzaka's Japanese club, who would get the posting fee if Matsuzaka agrees to a contract with the winning bidder.

The Lions have until Monday to announce whether they have accepted a bid, and various Japanese media reports indicated that Seibu executives were holding meetings to discuss their options and might not make an announcement until Monday morning in Japan, which is Sunday afternoon in the U.S.

Some observers were wondering why Seibu would wait so long, if the Red Sox bid so much for Matsuzaka. Other baseball officials were wondering what effect such a blockbuster deal would have on the market for other premier pitchers this off-season. If Matsuzaka, who has an impressive resume but has never pitched in the major leagues, is worth this kind of money, what will Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt get?

"If this is true, then this could be a devastating state of affairs for the industry this winter," said one National League GM.

However, Matsuzaka might be worth it. Hideki Matsui calls Matsuzaka "certainly one of the top pitchers in Japanese baseball." Asked if it would be a blow to the Yankees if the Red Sox landed Matsuzaka, Matsui said through a translator, "I'm really not sure. But from a Red Sox-Yankee rivalry standpoint, if that happens, it'll be really interesting how that works out."

The $40 million goes to Seibu... i believe

what this jap pitcher gets is additional i believe, say he asks for $20m a year for 5 years.. $140m for 5 years

Theo would be dumb enuff to pay this guy

Thats right. Seibu gets the highest bid money.

The team then gets the 30day negotiating rights for Matsuzaka.

Boars is gonna command top dollar for this guy, and wants it to be a 3 year deal. He could command 15 per year for 3 or 4 years. Which, when all is said and done, it could cost the sox (45 mill posting fee?) + 4/60 contract, over 100 million for Matsuzaka. It will probably cost them at least 90 million.

I really doubt the sox, of all teams who have penny pinched over a measely few million in recent years, would splash 40 mill just to negotiate a contract which would cost even more than that. Maybe they think they will be big players in japan and recoup that money over time with business over seas? Who knows. But I really doubt it.

Because Olney works for ESPN and reported that the sox "may have posted the highest bid", alot of other places are reporting, but all citing buster olney, not their own sources.

Let's lay off the racial commentary and talk baseball.

My stance is this -- if the Yankees get him he is a sure first ballot hall of famer.

If the Sox get him they are just trying to buy a championship and it is a bad move.
