There's so many good ones in here, and, narrowing it down to five, that's pretty tough. Most of the folks I'd like to chow down with are dead. A dead pool. Literally.

President Lincoln

Paul Robeson

Leo Castelli

Margaret Mead

Sylvia Plath

See, none of them can make it. And neither can this group...

Gertrude Stein

William S. Burroughs

Margaret Sanger

Man Ray

Bessie Smith

Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to call up my favorite twitchy actor, Vincent D'Onofrio. Even his five o'clock shadow can act. You can? Great. He said he'll be right over. Hehe.

"If you try to go beyond your interests just for the sake of pretensions or wealth, your art becomes less legitimate." - Vincent D'Onofrio

"It was good for me to learn that I can be an artist and a businessman simultaneously." - Vincent D'Onofrio

HolyJesusGod, I love that guy. That second statement? There's the key. I think a lot of artists miss that message, that there's no shame in making money off your art, and why shouldn't you? But, the line in the sand is not compromising your integrity once you have food on the table. It's why some artists become sell outs after they've arrived and other people starve before getting there. They lose the ability to make the distinction. I know people who think it's more valiant to starve than do what they need to do so they can later produce the art they were born to make. That's just stupid. Anyway, a complex subject.
