faba Posted November 15, 2006 Share Posted November 15, 2006 Sources: Green will start for Chiefs against Raiders By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com Just one day after Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards indicated he would withhold the identity of his starting quarterback until Sunday to create a competitive advantage over the Oakland Raiders, sources said on Wednesday afternoon that Trent Green will return to the starting lineup. Green Huard Green took snaps with the first-unit offense in the early portion of Wednesday's practice. "First of all, he's got to be cleared, he's got to practice and then I've got to make a decision," Edwards said on Tuesday. "And I'll make the right decision for the football team. I won't have to announce it. And I won't. Come [to the game] Sunday and find out. Why would I let the Raiders know what I'm going to do? That's not very smart." The decision to start Green over Damon Huard, who kept the Chiefs in playoff contention by compiling a 5-3 record in eight starts, came after specialists on Tuesday night cleared Green to return to practice in a full-time capacity. Green has not played since suffering a head injury in the Sept. 10 season opener when hit by Cincinnati defensive end Robert Geathers, but has been getting light work in some practices over the past two weeks. The veteran suited up the past two games, but as the No. 3 "emergency" quarterback. The decision to start Green, the sources said, is contingent upon him having no setbacks this week. Based on the prognosis from doctors, however, the Chiefs do not anticipate any problems. Green had never missed a regular-season game since Kansas City acquired him in a trade from the St. Louis Rams in 2001. Coming into the season, Huard had started just six games in his career, and none since 2000. He played well, though, in his eight starts, completing 134 of 221 passes for 1,684 yards, with 10 touchdown passes and just one interception. He registered a passer rating of over 100.0 in four starts, but struggled Sunday in a 13-10 loss to Miami. I stopped by some of the Chiefs boards, and a few of them think Hermy intentionally set up Huard for failure, so that he could bring Green in without controversy. I wouldn't put that past him. Not considering how just like Priest & LJ, Green also benefitted from the formerly dominant KC OL. It gave his mediocre receiving corps time to get open - an extra second here, an extra 2-3 seconds there goes a long way. He's 36 & doesn't exactly have the greatest mobility. Huard's got an 11:1 TD to INT ratio (best in the NFL). Even with last week's beating, he's still averaging close to 8 yards per attempt (also among the league's best). And those #'s include those games early-on when KC kept Tony Gonzalez in to block. He's got 4 multiple-TD games this year even with LJ eating up 10 scores on the ground. Exactly how much better than this does he think Trent Green will do after 9 weeks of inaction? This is what happens when a HC (particularly a "player's coach" like Hermie) develops too-close of a relationship with his players. He didn't play well at all (and don't use the Tony Gonzalez was hurt excuse because that came with 1:30 left in the game). If Huard had led the Chiefs to win over lowly Miami he would remain the starter but that loss opened it up for Herm to be able to start Green without much criticism. Didn't even think of that, why not let the opposing team know on Sunday morning? If I am the opposing team knowing this info now then I put in some serious blitz packages. Why not start Huard and then put Green in if a) Huard looks bad to start out they've got a comfortable lead & it's mop-up time. And then start him the following week. If Huard plays well (again) and it's close, then my God leave him in! Again - how much better than an 11:1 TD/INT ratio & 7.6 ypa does Herm think a rusty Trent Green is going to get him with two starting linemen out (not counting Roaf's Welbourn's retirements) and Tony Gonzalez out?
