Mangini: Important to Give Washington a Defensive Opportunity

He may not get the headlines, but Rashad Washington is one of the most valuable players on the New York Jets. Washington, now in his third season out of Kansas State, leads the Jets with 11 special teams tackles and nobody has registered more than his seven solo special teams stops. New York head coach Eric Mangini appreciates the effort and has rewarded Washington with more time in the defensive backfield.

"Rashad has been a core teams player for us," Mangini said. "He is really outstanding on special teams, one of our best. He is a very consistent player and based on the things he has done on special teams, I thought it was important to give him an opportunity to expand his role and see if he could contribute on the defensive side of the ball as well. We have done that in practice. He has done a nice job with that and then he gets a chance in the game."

Washington and his teammates will face an improving Texans team Sunday at the Meadowlands. Quarterback David Carr, a fifth-year pro, has weapons at his disposal and has connected on an impressive 69.7% of his passes behind the Texans' line.
