Helton to Angels rumor

Recommended Posts

Halo effect?

Dec 22 - The Angels and Rockies continue to discuss a possible deal for first baseman Todd Helton, the Los Angeles Times reports. Colorado GM Dan O'Dowd contacted Angels GM Bill Stoneman a week after the winter meetings to revive trade talks, offering to pay a bigger chunk of the $90 million remaining on Helton's nine-year, $141-million contract and to take less talent in return.

The original deal called for the Angels to send first baseman Casey Kotchman, catcher Jeff Mathis and triple-A shortstop Erick Aybar to Colorado for Helton, and for the Rockies to pick up an undisclosed portion of Helton's contract.

O'Dowd offered to replace Mathis in the package with a lesser prospect and to assume more of Helton's contract, but talks appear to have hit another snag over the financial terms of the deal.

Helton is guaranteed to make $16.6 million in each of the next four seasons, but of particular concern to the Angels is the $19.1 million Helton will receive in 2011, the final year of the contract, when he will be 37, and the $4.6 million it would cost after the 2011 season to buy out Helton's $23-million club option for 2012.
