Best Songwriters in music history?

Even bob dylan was impressed with Poly. its pretty easy to bash someones lyrics if you don't have the music behind it.

They all sound dumb, its the music behind it, and no one is calling Nirvana Pink Floyd, or the Doors. They are their own sound...

I agree with you but certain songs just sound good either way.. here's a great bobby dylan song.. the man can rhyme and ryhme and rhyme

Well, theyll stone ya when youre trying to be so good,

Theyll stone ya just a-like they said they would.

Theyll stone ya when youre tryin to go home.

Then theyll stone ya when youre there all alone.

But I would not feel so all alone,

Everybody must get stoned.

Well, theyll stone ya when youre walkin long the street.

Theyll stone ya when youre tryin to keep your seat.

Theyll stone ya when youre walkin on the floor.

Theyll stone ya when youre walkin to the door.

But I would not feel so all alone,

Everybody must get stoned.

Theyll stone ya when youre at the breakfast table.

Theyll stone ya when you are young and able.

Theyll stone ya when youre tryin to make a buck.

Theyll stone ya and then theyll say, good luck.

Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,

Everybody must get stoned.

Well, theyll stone you and say that its the end.

Then theyll stone you and then theyll come back again.

Theyll stone you when youre riding in your car.

Theyll stone you when youre playing your guitar.

Yes, but I would not feel so all alone,

Everybody must get stoned.

Well, theyll stone you when you walk all alone.

Theyll stone you when you are walking home.

Theyll stone you and then say you are brave.

Theyll stone you when you are set down in your grave.

But I would not feel so all alone,

Everybody must get stoned.

Rainy Day Women #12 and #35 :)

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

Well, I wake in the morning,

Fold my hands and pray for rain.

I got a head full of ideas

That are drivin' me insane.

It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

Well, he hands you a nickel,

He hands you a dime,

He asks you with a grin

If you're havin' a good time,

Then he fines you every time you slam the door.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

Well, he puts his cigar

Out in your face just for kicks.

His bedroom window

It is made out of bricks.

The National Guard stands around his door.

Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

Well, she talks to all the servants

About man and God and law.

Everybody says

She's the brains behind pa.

She's sixty-eight, but she says she's twenty-four.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

Well, I try my best

To be just like I am,

But everybody wants you

To be just like them.

They sing while you slave and I just get bored.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

A personal favorite of mine.

sofla im with you, check out this beatles site --

sounds like everyone is naming people that they like. if you're looking for just songwriters in general, how about burt bacharach or smokey robinson. there are way to many good ones to narrow it down. but it goes way beyond the early 90's for you younger guys.

lennon/mcartny/harrison

roger waters

hendrix

zappa

paul simon

peter gabriel

Good list.

Glad somebody mentioned Paul Simon.

Even though I don't really care for his stuff, the guy can write songs.

I'd add Jon Anderson (with help) from Yes and Ian Anderson from Tull as significant songwriters. Jack Bruce should also be in there.

that's pretty neive...You clearly know nothing about Nirvana, or that style.

That's like me saying never mention Johnny Cash cause i don't like country. Cash is still a great artist, i just don't sit down and listen to him.

I'm not naive, I listen to everything. Some of that music coming from that 'style' is fantastic. There are other bands that just did it better, lyrically and melodically. Nirvana wishes they were half the band AIC was.

Cantrell and Staley should be mentioned in this thread.

Soundgarden is the best band from that era IMO. I like AiC as well and I think Nirvana is pretty good. Cornell wrote some pretty good stuff and was an amazing singer.

Actually, it wasn't, because I somehow managed to forget my FAVORITE song-writer of all-time.

Croce is an excellent choice, troll! :yahoo:very few could weave a story like him...

some others in that genre would be chapin and arlo...

I'm surprised by the lack of mention of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. Green's post was right on!

I think that the people mentioned in this thread shows the age of a lot of the posters.

please note that I mentioned garcia/hunter in my first post in this thread! ;)

please note that I already gave you kudos in my post. Far be it from ME to say that YOU have bad taste in music! My point was that Garcia and Hunter have not been mentioned nearly enough... ESPECIALLY considering some of the other "songwriters" listed.

Chapin was one of the greatest. He could just take a story and turn it into a song like it was the easiest thing someone could do.

Croce... Chapin... Prine... Bragg...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned WOODY GUTHRIE yet.

I'm going to throw in Elton John, Billy Joel, Kris Kristofferson, Gordon Lightfoot, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Patti Smith, James Taylor, Allen Toussaint, Frank Zappa, and Warren Zevon.
