If You Could Move Anywhere In The US, Where Would You Go?

The best thing we ever did was move to South Carolina nine months ago.

I have 5 year old twin girls and an 11 year old daughter. I can tell you flat out that the twins are doing alot more in kindgergarten down here then my oldest did in New Jersey.

The school system down here are alot less crowded and the teachers actually have time to teach the students.

I'm making the same money working in Charlotte as an IT administrator that I was in NY/NJ, I have the beach a few hours away in Myrtle. I'm within walking distance of the Bobcats arena. I can see Triple-A baseball (Charlotte Knights) fifteen minutes from where I live and golf courses galore.

You have the mountains about 1 or 2 away if you like skiing. Carowinds amusement park is better than Great Adventure.

The only thing the Carolinas don't have that I miss is a casino with a poker room.

The reason I left is basically because we would never have been able to afford a house in Jersey. The prices and the taxes is what drove us out.

When I went to the Jets/Panthers game last years, was shocked how many NY/NJ people were down there. Drive from the airport was a little depressing, but it's not like driving to Laguardia, JFK or Newark brings you past any luxury housing. I was told by many people that as nice as Charlotte is the surroundinga rea, especially by the lake, is really nice.

your argument shifts more than mangini's defense. i learned it's pointless to beat a dead horse. you were completely exposed by a product of the yokel raleigh school system. i'm done here-- that's the only statistic i need. when you're ready to stop taking chances with your children's safety we can help you find a nice place to live in statistically lower violent crime NC.

Hahahaha. I will stay in the richest town, in the richest county, in the richest state in the world. But thanks anyway.

hello? did you read what i wrote. i didn't say there was nothing to do there, i said there was nothing MORE to do there than anywhere else. pretty much everywhere has the same things to do, just places like nyc have more of the same ****, but its still the same ****.

hello? did you read what I wrote?

You said it was ****. So I said people would die of boredom from said ****. Geez, just go back to your small house already.

Hey I agree NYC is a great place with loyts of fun stuff.. but same performers who go there come here. The few Broadway plays you go to a year , you can get on a plane for a weekend in NYC.

My only point we sometimes get bogged down in the few days a year we go to a football game or baseball game and say that I cant move because of that. I can see that train of thought for a unmarried , childless person. But for a married family person why would you bypass for your family a better environement, a better house, lower college costs (15K/year, room/board/tuition) , equal salary (if you are in tech field) etc so you can go to some football games or a few Broadway plays a year. Like I said , if you are blessed with enough income, you can always make a few of those 'enetertaiment' trips a year.

But to each his own.

Dude when I said entertainment I meant the hookers. You have a lot of catching up to do. When your hookers are on par with what we have here, I will move.

You don't even notice the Southern Drawls in this area. Alot of people have made the move (especially IT folks like myself) with BOA, Wachovia, Duke Energy all looking for people.

There are parts of Charlotte that you don't want to be around. There are also parts that are very nice.

Lake Wylie and Norman are real nice areas. If you go a little south like I did you have Fort Mill (Which is growing out of control), York and Rock Hill.

Charlotte reminds me alot of Philly. The downtown area is really nice but there are definately some seedy areas as it is with most big towns.

have fun overpaying for everything. you must be a really intelligent person.

Well when I turn 65 the benefits will be:

Cashing in my now 700k house that is paid for to buy a 200k-300k house to retire in.

Pull out my retirement savings that is larger from by larger lifetime earnings it will be worth it.

While you have your 200k house and less lifetime earnings. I surely hope the south has good jobs for people over 65.

Hey I got your PM, your mailbox is full so I couldn't respond to it.

We do not traffic drugs on this board. So please don't post that. I understand it would be a "good service" but it is just not something I want to get involved in.

i don't live in the south...i live in new york state.

yeah, you will have all that dough...great, 250k? yeah right... i can buy a house here for 25k that would be worth at least 250k anywhere near nyc. i don't need anywhere near that much money and i can invest in 10 times the amount of property for the same amount of money or less. the standard of living is so much higher there that i can live for 1/10th what you do. and guess what, jobs pay more than 1/10th what they do in nyc. actually, just for your own knowledge, they pay slightly more than half here. so like i said, have fun overpaying :)

At the end of the day the day I will have more net worth.

I would give consideration to moving down south if my kids weren't so happy in their school. Really couldn't even think about starting over. Prices up here are out of control.

So I blame my kids. And will continue spending like a mad man until the bank takes it all back. Or until rsherry loans me some cash.

It is not an elitist attitude I'm trying to portray and I apologize if that is the way it is coming across. Those are just the facts.

BRO --

I was just busting. You were backing up your story with facts.

And are you calling my friend Sean elitist? LOL.

the NC SAT he gave you was a county average, not a raleigh average,, of course in the money rich raleigh its higher,, ,, Greenwich is in Fairfield county,, what is Fairfield Countys average SAT score, not justr one town you pick in Fairfield County,,anyone can do that..there are several public schools in raliegh always over 1150, better than the 1125 you say..

you arent gonna win this one dude,, yo uare mislead ,, and if u think ct has best schools, sorry, ,i would say that some midwestern states and sections of calif top you there,, along with wake county in NC,,

Why would county education matter? I'm not sending my kids to the county to go to school. They are going to a specific towns school.

He could take the equity and obtain a few more small houses. Think of how environment friendly he is.

actually it wouldn't be any more environmentally friendly unless the big house he currently lives in was replaced with green space.

as for economically, the equity wouldn't be worth anymore than a similar house here, it would all be relative.

again with the one town numbers,, anyone can do that,

what county is ridgfield in? what are theoir numbers,,

you dont think Raleigh has many many high schools equal to the Ridgfield #s ,, of course they do,,

but that th ewhole secret, ,not saying the ct schools blow cause of hartford or new haven and finding tha tsafe haven somewhere i nct for your kid,, just like there are farm pockets i wouldnt trust to teach my dog,, but i found the places in NC that are equal or better than aywhere in NJ, Ny or Ct,, its all about reasearch. and if you find good education, THEN the next step is findin gthe best place to live, ie housing, cosyt of living, weather etc..its all about the WHOLE picture, ,not one facet, ,school, local teams, weather,, its about maximizing the WHOLE picture,,we cat get caught up in out self born prejudices from what we have seen on TV or experienced in short term bursts through our life,,

That's fine. You obviously have done very well for yourself and can afford to live up there.

The problem though is that alot of the middle class in Jersey is being forced either to the South or to the West (Pennsylvania).

I read one of your posts earlier about 120k-140k being middle class. For Jersey that is about right. It is also very high.

It's one of the reasons why we left. My wife is staying home taking care of the kids. If we were in New Jersey that paycheck would have been paying for day care or afterschool care for the kids.

Housing prices out of control. Property taxes out of control. State Government out of control. That is what New Jersey became to me.

So which is higher NC or CT as a whole?

who cares..are you sendinbg your kid to every school in Ct one day at a time?

you are getting anal..

its about where YOU ARE,,,

I guarantee CT is higher, ,NC is like in the 40s, ,CT is in the 30s nationwide, ,thats because CT has craphole ghettos and NC has hillybilly farm areas..

ITS ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE,,,

here is a breakdown by state with new sat scores,, ct and nc arent real high

http://www.midwestsites.com/stellent2/groups/public/documents/pub/mws_am_ed_000924.hcsp

but again, its about where you are in tha tstate

Next time you are trying to prove your school system is better than mine try to get the right letters next to the right words.

Just a thought.

My wife stays home. The kids are in private (Catholic) school. It is a stretch. Believe me I know.

I agree, but that is capitalism.
