Lions trade Bly to Broncos for Tatum Bell, Foster

The Detroit Lions have agreed to send cornerback Dre' Bly to the Denver Broncos in exchange for running back Tatum Bell and tackle George Foster. Trades cannot become official until Friday, the first day of the league year.

Bly, a two-time Pro Bowl performer who earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1999 St. Louis Rams, did not fit well in the Tampa 2 defensive scheme employed by second-year head coach Rod Marinelli and new defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Thus the Lions granted Bly and his agent, Kennard McGuire, permission to seek a trade two weeks ago.

The New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and Washington Redskins also were in the running for the 29-year-old Bly.

Neither Bly nor McGuire was available for comment.

In Denver, Bly will join Champ Bailey in forming one of the game's top cornerback tandems. The Broncos needed a replacement for Darrent Williams, who was killed in a drive-by shooting after a New Year's Eve party in Denver.

Bly is considered one of the game's best big-play cornerbacks. In eight seasons he has intercepted 31 passes, forced 17 fumbles, and scored eight touchdowns (five interception returns, two fumble returns, one punt return). Last season Bly tied for the team lead with three interceptions and led the Lions with 18 passes defended and four forced fumbles.

Bly has one year remaining on the $22 million free-agent contract he signed in 2003 and the Broncos are expected to begin working on a long-term agreement with McGuire.

Wow...guess we know who has the best corners in the NFL. I can't say I really get this one for the Lions, unless they were just trying to get rid of his cap room. I'll admit I don't know much about George, but unless he is a great Tackle, you dont trade your #1 CB for a change of pace back when you already have Kevin Jones....

Seems like a bad deal, but what do I know. GREAT move by Denver.

Foster is a bust. Not sure what the Lions were thinking there. Probably something like "Hey, I'm Matt Millen!".

I kind of see the Tatum Bell part of it, because Jones is iffy for next season with his foot injury. But, I am pretty sure they could have got a first day pick for Bly. Dumb trade by Detroit.

Wow that was a very good trade by the Lions..

Broncos are worse today

How are the Broncos worse? Unless George is some stud T I don't know about this is an awesome trade for the Broncos...

Tatum Bell was a third down back, he is real fast but he cannot carry the ball consistently for you. Think it was a bad move when they traded Portis for Champ? CBs are WAY more valuable than a RB, especially in the Denver system which can turn Max into a 1,000 yard RB. Again I will admit I don't know anything about George but unless he is a great tackle this is a good deal.

Agree with both of you Troll and 124. If foster is essentially a bust as you put it then this deal is basically a pro bowl corner for a third down RB WHEN THE LIONS DONT EVEN NEED ONE. RB is one of the few positions they don't need to address, plus they could have gotten Joe Thomas in the draft which would have been a T upgrade.... I just don't see the logic in this.

Maybe they think Foster can be an adequate starting T and they want to go after Brady Quinn or something? Maybe a guy like Gaines Adams? I dont know...Matt Millen is awful.

Going to be awfully hard to pass on the Broncos for a couple of years.

sort of, their linebackers have taken a turn for the worse (i haven't watched them, only read about "the ultimate leader" not being saticfied with them). It also seemed that their front 4 came back to earth late in the year.

If they can find a way to generate pass rush, could be a preseason pick to the AFC championship game...pending on culter.

Lions acquired offensive tackle George Foster in a three-player deal.

Foster, a 2003 first-rounder, never fulfilled hopes in Denver but will be the favorite to take over for Rex Tucker at right tackle. His addition makes it less likely the Lions take Joe Thomas, and more likely they deal down.

Denver reportedly got some "feelers" for T George Foster at the Combine.

The Detroit Free Press mentions the Lions as having potential interest in Foster via a trade involving one of the Broncos' two third-round picks for Dre' Bly. Foster is expected to be dealt by Denver, rather than released.

So the Lions traded for a guy that the Broncos were thinking of releasing??? That didnt fulfill expectations for a team with a good running game?

I guess this is an early birthday present for Tatum (birthday is tomorrow)... playing for Detroit he will only see 15-20 carries a game, a load he can seem to handle... (detroit only averaged 19 carries a game LY)

I was disappointed it wasnt the Mets George Foster....BTW, the real George Foster turns 59 in April.... At 6'1" and 189 lbs he would be a terrible lineman...

actually this is a great move by the broncos and a good move by detroit. detroit needed some help on the o line and obvisouly denver needed a new cb.

I agree. This is a good move by both sides.

Foster looks like a big boy... and the Lions need help everywhere on the OLine. He could be a RT or a G. Bell is a nice option, considering that they don't really have a back up RB, and Jones isn't healthy.

All this did was give the Lions more options, and a hole on Defense, which Bly wasn't suited to play. Bly isn't a Tampa 2 corner. But, to say this was a good move... it wasn't. It's lateral, at best.
