JetNation Posted March 1, 2007 Share Posted March 1, 2007 With an eye toward the future, the Jets signed wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery to a contract extension, the team announced today. Cotchery, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2006, was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2008. He would’ve been a highly coveted player on the open market. Financial details of the extension weren’t immediately available. Based on the market, Cotchery probably landed a deal in the $3 million- to-$4 million-a-year range. This signing represents a departure for the Jets. In the past, they waited until training camp to start negotiations with future free agents. Clearly, this is a different philosophy. It probably has something to do with Cotchery, an ideal player for the Eric Mangini program. After unseating Justin McCareins for the starting flanker position, Cotchery posted career highs for catches (82) and yards (961).
