124
STEINBACH TO BROWNS A league source tells us that the Browns are expected to sign offensive lineman Eric Steinbach to a deal averaging $7 million per year. Steinbach, who most recently played for the Bengals, will essentially make Steve Hutchinson money. The four-year veteran was one of the members of the Cincy team who got busted last year. He was charged for boating while drunk. Technically, teams can't even speak to free agents until 12:01 a.m. EST Friday. But anyone who follows the league knows that no one follows this rule. madmike1
Signing guards in FA is a waste. He's not worth the money he's gonna get.

RICKIE NEW YORK
Aside from nate clements I considered him to be THE top f.a. available. Man I was really hoping they would get a deal done with that kid. A monster who's only 26 and can also play tackle.

A monster who's only 26 and can also play tackle. I wouldn't call him a monster. He's actually undersized though not a finesse player like D'Brickashaw Ferguson. He's a good player who could have played Left Guard for us. No way is he worth Steve Hutchinson money. These free agents are going to have a huge payday. Blalock has far more upside & potential to be a pro-bowl talent than Steinbach. Steinbach has been & is good. But he's never been (nor will be) one of the top-10 guards in the league: Steve Hutchinson Will Shields (though he's retiring this year) Brian Waters Larry Allen (even at his age; Frank Gore would get his vote) Alan Faneca Shawn Andrews David Diehl Ruben Brown (even at age 35) Kris Dielman Vince Manuwai Mike Wahle Marco Rivera Chris Snee Logan Mankins Kendall Simmons and up-and-comer's: Jahri Evans Davin Joseph Daryn Colledge Deuce Lutui Max Jean-Gilles (and guards coming out this year like Blalock) are all either (a) just flat-out better, or ( have way more upside. Ridiculous for Cleveland to pay Steinbach like a top-3 guard.
The Troll
$7 million a year for a guard is just ridiculous. It's like paying $3 million for a punter.
baamf
I would have loved to get Steinbach but that money is nuts. I hope they are at least talking to Dielman now....

#27TheDominator
This reminds me of all the talk about drafting Carricker. If everybody loves the guy, everybody thinks he's can't miss and everybody thinks he'd be a great fit then he is not going to go cheap or be there with the 37th pick in the draft. I'm glad we're not rushing to spend big $$ on FAs. Steinbach probably isn't worth $7M per, but when 30 teams are considering you it's not going to be a bargain. PeterNorth09
and up-and-comer's: Jahri Evans Davin Joseph Daryn Colledge Deuce Lutui Max Jean-Gilles (and guards coming out this year like Blalock) are all either (a) just flat-out better, or ( have way more upside. Ridiculous for Cleveland to pay Steinbach like a top-3 guard. With the exception of Joseph, all those guys you mentioned were taken in the 2nd round or after. Jahri Evans, the best rookie OG, was a 4th round pick. Still, I think the Jets should take Blalock at 25 because he can play the RT position as well as RG. We can also get Ramirez in the 3rd or 4th round probably.
#27TheDominator
Who ever said that Carriker would be there at 37? Most people believe he will be a top fifteen pick. . Now everybody knows he will be an early pick. Maybe 11. Earlier, around New Year's people were thinking maybe we could get him in the 2nd. Who? That doesn't mean that someone that wanted Carriker in the second round two months ago is a dumbass. At the time, that's where the guy was projected. No. My point certainly wasn't that anybody was a dumbass. My point is if pre-combine and senior bowl somebdy is projected in the 2nd round and everybody wants the guy he is projected too low. Don't tell me everybody wasn't thinking they'd strike gold with Carriker in the 2nd. Not just Jets fans either. Sure he had a nice run since then, but I don't think he did anything shocking or unexpected to move 30 or so spots in his "projection." Just like projecting Steinbach's salary being like a regular guard salary. There is a lot of money out there for the first time in a long time and players are cashing in. GREENSMACKS
they have to pay him that much considering half the players got staph infection in the locker room, hopefully he gets his shots before he goes there
124
$7M/yr for Steinbach??? lol Indeed. One has to believe that Kris Dielman will now definitely be looking for a similiar deal and I am sure that he will get it.. hopefully not from us. I'd rather go with Blalock and Moore and have Blalock at RT.
