Never mind that it's the most ever paid to a guy with less than 2 years in the majors.

Phils kept Howard in the minors for almost 2 years after he was ready when they had Thome, turning down numerous offers for him. And they did it also to keep his service time down to prevent him from getting the free agancy ASAP and keep him price down. They probably think that was all really smart, but when Howard looks at the future and figure the Phils cost him 75+ career homers and God knows how much cash, it's not going to sit very well.

DOn't think it's gonna be forgotten come said free agency, which coincides pretty closely with the expiration of Jason Gaimbi's contract.

You have a bad read on Howard. That is not the type of person that he is.

The Phils will re-up him after next season. Count on it. And he will be smart to re-up. There are no guarantees. His deal will be 100 mill + in seeing what they gave Utley.

Howard is by all accounts a a good guy. But the same way the Sax cost Wade Boggs a ton of hits by keeping him in the minors way past his ready date, they'll regret jerking him around like this. 2 prime years of MLB salary and years of production Howard will never get back mean the PHils will have pay up to keep him with no discount; no sweetheart deals after effing him like that.

The Phillies were willing to trade Howard to the Pirates for Kris Benson 3 years ago but our GM... well there aren't words to describe how stupid it was. Instead he traded Benson for Ty Wigginton and Jose Bautista (who had already been on the Pirates but left unprotected).

You are correct-The Phils did play with him in terms of his eligibility, but, that is baseball.

The Phils are looking to lock him up after this year. If they don't, then the antennas should go up and there may be something to a disgruntled player in Howard. Just, the signs are not there right now.

The way baseball works, it is to teh team's advantage the first 4 years, and, if you are evena decent player, it is to the players advantage. extremely. It begins to even out.

Did Ryan miss maybe a season of eligibility? Maybe so. But he helped some holes in his game also. They did think of trying him in th OF, but he is just not that player

Good post and Howard's situation is no different than below. You don't give out the enormous contract until you have to.

The Yankees are offering both Chien-Ming Wang and Robinson Cano one-year deals worth about $500,000.

They'll have their contracts renewed if they don't agree to deals. It doesn't look like the Yankees will discuss a long-term deal with either player before next winter. Both have five years to go before free agency.

Wang, who will turn 27 on March 31, made $353,175 last year when he went 19-6 with a 3.63 ERA.

The 19 wins tied Wang for the league lead with Cy Young-winner Johan Santana.

Cano, 24, batted .342 and finished behind Joe Mauer (.347) and Derek Jeter (.343). Source: New York Post

Excellent points about Wang and Cano. Same boat as Howard (although Howard will dwarft them in future salary).

Howard will get his 100 million+ before he hits FA. And he likely will get 1 or 2 large contracts in his arb. years. He has nothing to worry about.
