jetophile
Went to catch it tonight. In my opinion, NOT a waste of money. I know many folks will get turned off by its length, but the length was necessary to the scope of the story. Great performances all around. Robert Downey, Jr. (in real life, a human C*ckroach - you can't kill him) does a great job as borderline sc*mbag San Francisco Chronicle reporter Avery who spirals out of control and self-destructs. Jake Gyllenhaal's unassertive, invisible, dorky cartoonist turned sleuth turned crime writer, you can see the transformation. Good stuff. I think Graysmith (Gyllenhaal) got it right over the true identity of the murderer. Even the prime suspect is sufficiently creepy. Mark Rufalo, you don't see much of him, more of an indie film actor, but I always liked him. Not a bad turn by anyone, really. I'm sure they'll be many detractors citing 'boring' and 'too long', but if you like crime drama and good acting, I'd highly recommend it. EDIT: And by the way, Jake Gyllenhaal, nobody get hurts there. Hehe.
jetophile
Do you mean to tell me that nobody ELSE on this board saw this movie over the weekend?! Weak.
shutout
I went and saw Zodiac this weekend too. Really really well done. Fincher is a great director, definitely doesn't get the credit he deserves. The acting is real good in this one, even Gyllenhaal, who I normally can't stand. Robert Downey Jr was also great in a role that was a real stretch for him: a drunk, drugged out weirdo posted that in the SJ movie thread, didn't see this one until now

Criminals weren't concerned with DNA at the time, but who is to say he didn't have someone else lick the envelopes? It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. And, more interesting still if several DNA samples sent for analysis all turn up different from one another. And still Orenthal James goes golfing. jetophile
Didn't want to start a new thread just for this, but I went to see 'Dead Silence' tonight. Snort. It had its moments and it was exactly what I thought it was going to be. A fun type horror flick with no thinking required. What got me was this Hispanic guy towards the front of the movie theatre. He kept guffawing out loud at critical moments. It was funny as hell. You know, these pivotal scenes that are supposed to be scary, and he'd just bust a gut and get the whole theatre going. Ventriloquist dummy with a hankering for murder, and there'd be this closeup of the dummy and he'd let loose. It was so infectious, and then of course I'd start screeching. Good stuff. So did anyone else see 'Zodiac' or what?

Probably died of natural causes, eventually.
Bugg
Jake Gyllenhaal is just a horrible actor. I never saw "BrokebacK" but he killed "Jarhead". Get the sense that this kid has very little life experience outside of his well-moneyed bubble. What am I playing today-gay cowboy, Marine, reporter? Same blank stare, empty face. He might as well be ordering at Dunkin Donuts for all the range of emotion he shows. He and his sister Maggie are sons of a Hollywood executive who've sold his spoiled brat kids like soap. I'd say going from Marine to gay Cowboy to reporter gives him range as an actor, but to each his own. I didn't see 'Brokeback' yet, either. Never got around to it. I did like him in 'Donnie Darko'. I was never really that high on Maggie. If you hate Gyllenhaal, there's plenty of other good performances to enjoy if you decide to see it. Sounds like you didn't, but I can't tell for sure. I meant you don't see as much of him as other actors, not that you don't see much of him in this movie. EDIT: I'll go and check out the rest of your movie thread.
