Cowboys to add Davis to offensive line

By Michael Smith

ESPN.com

The Dallas Cowboys are finalizing an agreement with free agent offensive lineman Leonard Davis, the second pick in the 2001 NFL draft who has played the last six seasons for the Arizona Cardinals.

Davis, 6-feet-6, 366 pounds, is expected to play either right tackle or right guard for the Cowboys, depending on the resolution of contract talks with current Cowboys right tackle Marc Columbo, an unrestricted free agent the Cowboys hope to re-sign.

Davis' contract is expected to exceed the free agent deals of Bills guard Derrick Dockery (7 years, $49 million) and Browns guard Eric Steinbach (7 years, $49.5 million).

Davis visted the Washington Redskins and was considering a visit to the New York Giants, but decided on the Cowboys due to a desire to stay close to his hometown of Wortham, Texas, just south of Dallas.

Davis was an All-America tackle at the University of Texas, and played his first three seasons at guard for the Cardinals before switching to tackle the last three seasons.

Senior writer Michael Smith covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

I wonder how much they overpaid? It's been quite the site to see how this brilliantly run team back in the Aikman/Irvin/Smith days(albeit, without a cap i think?) has been so horrendously run since the departure of Jimmy Johnson. You'd think that eventually the Eagles would be overrun, but with how the other 3 teams are being run in the division, they may not lose the division for the next 5-6 years.

Well, it seems they may not be looking to tie up Colombo after all. Good. He'll be MUCH cheaper than Davis.

We need a RT very, very badly.

I'm not against bringing Colombo here but wasn't the Dallas O line AWFUL last year and wasn't he a part of that? I don't know how much of an upgrade he is.

SE, wasn't there word that he was one of the few FA's we were talking with sometime yesterday? Or was it just your run of the mill rumor?

I don't know what our interest in Colombo is other than a line in an article.

Colombo clearly has fallen short of what the Bears hoped to get when they made him a first-round pick back in 2002. He's one man on the OL. I would hardly assign all praise or blame for Dallas' OL to him. They did have Adams and Rivera on their line. Bledsoe got killed, but he stands back there like a statue. Romo seemed to have adequate time to fling the ball all over the field (and that's not including all of the would-have-been dropped passes that were right on the money). They also ran the ball effectively for the most part. Jones & Barber combined for >1700 yds and 18 TD's.

To say he's not much of an upgrade from Clement is ridiculous, though. Clement isn't even a real starter. Even in beggars-can't-be-choosers mode at the position, Tangini only wanted him at backup money b/c that's likely where they viewed his 2007 season being spent.

Cowboys | Davis lands seven-year deal

Sun, 4 Mar 2007 15:25:58 -0800

John Murphy, of Yahoo! Sports, reports the Dallas Cowboys have signed unrestricted free-agent OT Leonard Davis (Cardinals) to a deal worth $49.6 million over seven years. $18.75 million of the deal is guaranteed, with $24 million being received over the first three years of the deal. He is expected to play right tackle or right guard depending upon what happens during the remainder of the free-agent period.

$49.6 million over 7 years with an $18.75 signing bonus for Leonard freakin' Davis? You can have him Dallas.:character42:

Aside from Nate Clements that is the richest deal signed so far in these first few days of Free Agency.
