PFSIKH
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2007/news/story?id=2787719 Santana eager to negotiate new deal with Twins FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Despite the fact the he won't be a free agent until after the 2008 season, Johan Santana says that the Minnesota Twins should try to sign him to a long-term extension sooner rather than later. Johan Santana Starting Pitcher Minnesota Twins Profile 2006 SEASON STATISTICS GM W L BB K ERA 34 19 6 47 245 2.77 "If Minnesota wants to keep me, the earlier the better for a contract negotiation," Santana told ESPNdeportes.com. "The closer I get to free agency the more difficult it will be." The native of Venezuela won his second AL Cy Young award in three years in 2006, taking the pitching triple crown in the junior circuit with 19 victories, a 2.77 ERA and 245 strikeouts. In addition, Santana led the league in starts (34) and innings pitched (232). Santana will make $12.2 million this season, the third of a four-year, $39.7 million deal he signed with the Twins in February 2005. "I'm happy the way things have gone in Minnesota and I'd like to stay here for a long time, but if I do opt for free agency, my agent will be the one in charge of the next contract," said Santana. "I'm not really concerned with the specifics of what we'd ask for right now, because I've still got two years left with the Twins
mbn007
Why shouldn't the Royals apply. They took the Yankees tax money and spent it on Meche, for $55 million. Equating this to Santana, comes out to $346 MILLION OVER 10 YEARS. You mean they don't have room to add salary?

Johan is making 12.2 this year and he initmates the price is only going to go up. He might make ARod's peryear average seem cheap
Kidhuman
Meh, we know if he hots free agency, he will wind up in pinstripes at 20 million per year. I cant wait.

The Twins will trade him before that happens. If he is entering his third year of a four year contract his value is at it's highest point. If they do not resihn him, then moving him this year will maximize their returm. Yankee fans do not get too cozy with Phillip Hughes. That would seem to be the key player in a trade for Johan. I strongly doubt Hughes will be moved, even for Johan. It will be a combination of other prospects, but not Phil. That said, I doubt the Twins let him get away. I really believe Pohlard will finally open the vault, dust off his billions (that's billions, with a "B") and pay Johan what he wants. To do anything else is sending a poor message to the Twins fans. It would be like letting Kirby Puckett go as a FA, which he did not allow to happen. Nor was he traded away. But they came up with the money and signed him. There are no better pitching prospects in the majors then hughes and the other teams who have guys who are close to hughes can't afford to pay santana. The yankees will be able to offer them an offer of prospects maybe with something like a tabata and sanchez package that other teams won't be able to beat. I do not think they have a stadium plan in place yet and would think that would only help getting one. I am just saying if Phillip is as good as all you think he is, he would be a real good bargining chip to land Johan. I understand the move our respective teams have done about building from within, but he has not prooven anything yet and Johan has. They won't need to trade hughes if santana hits the market. If you are GM of the Twins and it is obvious Johan is going to hit free agency, do you let him leave or trade him? While it is not out of the realm they use him until he leaves, they are better served trading him to get something back. His value will be it's greatest this June/July if he is sitting at 12-3 with a 2.something ERA and 150Ks.

And my point is that the yankee farm system is so good right now that they might be able to get Santana without giving up hughes should he hit the market
