Wes Welker a Patriot

Patriots acquired Wes Welker for second and seventh-round draft picks. A long term deal has been agreed to, but is undisclosed.

The $39 million figure that was floated for Welker's proposed offer sheet probably included a lot of phony money and years. Since the two teams dealt directly, it won't be necessary to pay Welker so much or so creatively. Welker provides the Patriots a versatile receiver who stands a good chance at starting. He'll also return punts. Don't be surprised if Welker's solid 2006 numbers improve. Mar. 5 - 5:05 pm et

Wow.

New England still has 2 1st round picks in which they can pick-up another WR or they could still trade for Randy Moss or sign Donte Stallworth. The Pats continue to get better and better.

They appear to be wanting to go out in a blaze of glory here. Bundling all their eggs in these next 2 seasons.

I think there is something to be made of the Belichick riding off into the sunset scenario some what soon. we shall see.

I don't know if Belichick is ready to ride off into the sunset just yet but losing to the Colts really sent him off the deep end. Looks to me like he has no intention of taking any prisoners this season.

wow wes welker. I'm shaking in my boots!

he fits their scheme really well, has good hands, quick. he's much better than cladwell, and gaffney.

Drafting a WR early second last year, picking up welker...chances of signing moss seem less and less.

When the Pats go 12-4, 13-3 or 14-2 this season and the Jets are 7-9 and all of you are jumping off the deep end we should bring this thread back up when you all said that all the Patriot signings were no biggie.:character42:

Good let them become the oppisite of everything that made them great. I'm loving this.

The Pats are signing players to address specific needs. They will also do that in the Draft. I don't see how that is the "opposite of everything that made the great."

With the way the schedule is nowadays the Pats and Jets have the same schedule with the exception of these games:

The Pats host San Diego (14-2 in 2006).

The Pats visit Indy (12-4 in 2006, SB Champs).

The Jets host Kansas City (9-7 in 2006).

The Jets visit Tennessee (8-8 in 2006).

That is a major advantage for the Jets who just happened to finish 2 games behind the Pats last season.

Great points Gainzo.

The Patriots have spent money on FAs in the past. People focus on Deon, but they went after Derrick Mason, who took less money to sign with Baltimore and landed Rosevelt Colvin to an expensive contract.

Belichick has not set aside his team management beliefs.

Sorry, but a 2nd round pick, and a throw away 7th rounder, is too much to pay for a slot reciever/KR. Plus, I've had enough with the shorties at wide out. I 'dunno - he reminds me of Tom Dwight, for obvious reasons. :)

He reminds me of a young Troy Brown. Welker is 5-9, Troy is 5-10.

What was your point again about "shorties" :P

Or Troy Brown maybe?

An undrafted rookie FA that earns himself a job.

Then as a sophmore leads a team in receiving with a handful of players the team has alot more invested in.

Get used to it Garb, I am convinced that our offense just doesn't require 6'3" receivers. It's pointless to have deep threats when Brady overthrows them by 5 yds. anyway.

The real Welker deal:

5 years, $18.1 million, $10 million in guarentees.

Supposedly the 7 years, $39 million was a contract they were prepared to offer that would be HEAVILY backloaded to scare Miami off of re-signing him. Good job by the Pats' FO.

NE has lost their minds, a 2nd rd pick wasn't good enough to give up now they have to give up a 7th too? for a #3 WR and below average return man? Keep it up NE!

A seventh rounder isn't much to give up to have the contract go from $39M to $18M. The questions are, why would Miami be scared off by "phony money" and why would Welker to along with it? I assume both employ people capable of reading contracts.

$39 to 18 is irrlevant, that contract was backloaded and he never would have seen that money. The guaranteed money is the issue and giving up a 2 and guaranteed $10 mil is way too much for Wes Welker.

You should be.

112 receptions in the regular season and 27 in the post season. Wes Welker was a fantastic addition to the Pats.

Sweet, and you guys still lost in the superbowl.

BTW, take Randy Moss off the pats and Welker aint sh#t. He's a good little player but not as good as the numbers he put up this year.
