this is an alarming deal for me. i hope this does not turn into a reucuring theme where mangini keeps giving up draft picks for second rated RBs. thomas jones is a good back but a feature back he is n

He had a few games where he didn't have great rushing games, but when you split time that is bound to happen. I don't think he is a one year stop gap. I see him being productive for at the least 2 years.

and he can catch the ball out of the backfield too...

Absolutely. He's steady, reliable, doesnt put the ball on the ground, good head on his shoulders. This is a good addition.

I really hate this. Why move down 30 spots in the draft just to get a one-year stop gap?

I disagree with you on the 1 yr stop gap bit...yes he's 29 but he also split time with Benson and was not worn down...if he splits time here with Leon like expected i think it would give us at least 2-3 yrs for us to search for a great young back

I didn't realize we got their 2nd too. IT's not as bad as i thought but Thomas Jones is nothing special.

You of everyone have no room to talk. You've been whinning and complained for the last several days that theyve done nothing, now they do something and you hate it....get real dude.

he's gonna be 29 in 6 months-I love the 61 first downs

I didn't want them to do something just for the sake of doing something and i'm VERY MUCH on the fence about this deal.

We do not need him to carry the ball 30 35 times a game- continue the shared carrying the ball that he was doing with the Bears and being successful

Exactly, he will not be worn down like Curtis was. Not with Mangini's phylosophy.

The Troll may have a point in this possible being a one year stop gap. Why? This is why. Here is Thomas Jones' latest contract information:

Jones signed a four-year contract with the Bears on March 3, 2004. The deal is worth approximately $10 million and includes a signing bonus of about $3.5 million, according to ESPN.com.

Meaning he is in the last year of his deal in which he's making around $2.5 million a season and he will be 29, going onto 30 next offseason meaning he will be looking for his last big pay day ala what Ahman Green & Travis Henry recieved. Do the Jets bring him back at that cost at the end of next season? Time will tell.

The Jets and Jones' representative, Drew Rosenhaus, are believed to be working on a new contract with Jones, whose unhappiness with his Bears contract led to him skipping offseason workouts this past season.
If this is a one year stopgap fine. if it means no turner next year then it's bad.

Anybody know what they're saying on Bears boards??

How do we give up the best player and leader on our offense and a 2nd round pick for a 2nd round pick? JA proves once again he has no idea what he is doing with this offense. It's bad enough he traded away a great player in favor of a guy who can't stay on the field...But to give up a pick as well...In the same round????

This is an awful awful trade...If JA wanted to get rid of his best player on offense, he should have at least gotten a 2nd round pick without giving up a 2nd round pick!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me why any quality free agent would want to come to chicago???? We dont reward the guys who perform! We run them out of town! Meanwhile turnoversaurus Rex will get handed the starting job again. They need to change their philosophy towards their players otherwise we are going to have another 21 years of futility.

He isn't enough of a change of pace to Leon to be effective. Both of them would be more effective when paired with a bruiser, rather than with each other. Running backs tend to go down-hill at 30, anyway. It doesn't matter that Jones hasn't had a ton of carries in his career. His best asset, his speed, will begin to erode in the next year or two. Then, what will he be? He's never been a power back. He's no longer fast. He'll be a cap albatross, because we signed him to a big extension at age 29. Didn't we do that before?

I saw that too Smizzy - hilarious.

Anyone who does not like Thomas Jones has never seen him play a game. He is Priest Holmes II (In Priest's prime ofcourse). Get a RG and or RT with attitudes in here and watch out.

I don't get it. You guys were happy when we moved down and got Doug Jolley. Yet this time we get Thomas Jones and fill a major need and you are bitching?

Did I miss something?

I wasn't happy. I was pissed. Much more so than I am now.

The fact that we got Chicago's 2nd round pick (63rd overall) makes this deal a solid move for for the Jets.

Had we just done the 37th overall pick FOR Thomas Jones I dont think I'd be happy. But we basically dropped from 37th overall to 63rd in order to get a solid legit starting NFL RB.

Nice move.

Thats a question mark. ESPN says they are talking to his agent about a new contract...

Good because he has at least 2 good yrs left in him. He is still running damn good. Ill take a 1300 yrd back anyday of the week.

Thomas Jones is a damn good running back. I like this move a lot. He's outplayed Benson since he's been there. He moves the chains, decent quickness and burst.

He's better than anyone we would have gotten at 25, anyway.

Like someone had said, this is probably are best bet unless we wanted to fork over a bunch of picks for Peterson.
