Jetlag
would be the San Diego Chargers Unless they intend on giving their #2 RB a considerable contract next year MT is gonna walk. There best option to unload him was to trade him to the Jets. I bet Tannenbaum told AJ Smith to go f himself and Smith figured he was bluffing. Well AJ good work "Lamonting" Michael Turner. Jetlag
Ike Turner is laughing all the way to the bank. Smizzy we were 2 of the few who wanted nothing to do with giving up a 1st straight up for this guy. I'm MUCH MUCH MUCH happier with how our RB situation panned out. If the Chargers were really serious about a trade they should drop LT. Worked out for the cowboys, trading a 28 year old Herschel Walker for (LB Jesse Solomon, DB Issiac Holt, RB Darrin Nelson, LB David Howard, DE Alex Stewart), and 6 assorted draft picks (conditional 1st & 2nd round in '90 and '91; 1st round and conditional 3rd in '92). The 3 first rounders alone would be worth it...
pjam76
I think SD has far more problems than Turner. They lost most of their coaching staff. Half their players aren't happy. Last season they dumped their QB Drew Brees. And now they have a new head coach who has proven he really is a great offensive coordinator but below avg head coach in the regular season and playoffs, if he ever makes it there. pjam76
LT is LT. Plain and simple... However if I remember correctly, The Cowboys went on to win 3 super bowls, became a contender for like 6-7 years while the Vikings never even made it to a Super Bowl and Walker was gone a few seasons later. While I'd love LT to be in a Jets Uniform, if they have to trade half their picks for the next 4 seasons, it probably isn't worth it.

pjam76
That would be a dumb move, plain and simple. Trading a 1st and 3rd for a guy who has never played in the NFL. Yeah some mop up duty now and again isn't really playing... While Jones might not be some great RB, at least he might have a year, two or even three left in him and he's proven he can play a full NFL season as a starter. Hes proven he can play in a super bowl and playoffs. He's proven he can beat out the competition for a starting job, even though the team doesn't want him too because of money and drafting another RB in the first round. They got him for a second round pick and got another second round pick back. Trading a 1st and 3rd for a guy like Turner would be stupid.
CoachTsurfing
tj I was just thinking the same thing last night. I was also thinking, lets say this doesn't work out. Turner will be a fa next year, unless they resign him, so we could possible be in a better seat next year to get turner. Now, I'm hoping we won't need to. But at least there are options now. bitonti
everyone assumes that SD wanted to trade Turner Nothing has happened this offseason that proved that - in fact, the SD Chargers did everything they could to keep him why would a 14-2 team trade a key backup for draft picks? Sperm Edwards
AJ Smith is a nitwit..thank gawd he's not running the Jets..he will run the Chargers right into the ground. Great point about Michael Turner Jetlag AJ Smith is a nitwit??? This is the GM who, while keeping the Chargers in great cap shape, acquired or drafted: LaDanian Tomlinson (traded down instead of drafting Michael Vick) Drew Brees (round 2) Philip Rivers (instead of Eli Manning) Antonio Gates (undrafted) Shawne Merriman (free pick in the Eli Manning trade) Shaun Phillips (round 4) Jamal Williams (supplemental 2nd-rounder) Marcus McNeill (round 2) Luis Castillo (round 1) Kris Dielman (undrafted) Nick Hardwick (free pick in the Eli Manning trade) Shane Olivea (round 7) Michael Turner (round 5) Nate Kaeding (round 3) Igor Olshansky (round 2) Lorenzo Neal (FA) Keenan McCardell (FA) Randall Godfrey (FA) Mike Goff (FA) Donnie Edwards (FA) Steve Foley (FA) He seems to miss on DB's and WR's in the draft, but who knows how much of that is Marty not developing or using them properly: Antonio Cromartie (just a rookie last year though) Quentin Jammer Vincent Jackson Sammy Davis (ok, he was terrible) Drayton Florence Terrance Kiel (he sucked too) Reche Caldwell And no one predicted Ryan Leaf to be such a monumental bust. Half the people had him rated higher than Peyton Manning & San Diego was desperate for a QB. At the time, it was a no-brainer pick after the Colts took Manning. Sometimes you just never know. But at least he learned from the all-hype mistakes. He was one of very few GM's and fans who didn't buy into all the Michael Vick hype when the whole planet seemed convinced he was going to "redefine" the position. For those who don't remember, there was WAYYY more hype about Vick than there ever was with Reggie Bush. Fastest guy in the draft with a cannon for an arm. AJ Smith traded down & picked up players & draft picks in the process. In trading down from #1 to #5, who did he pick instead? LaDanian Tomlinson. He also pulled off THE draft-day coup of the decade, trading down 3 spaces to turn Eli Manning into Philip Rivers, Shawne Merriman, and Nick Hardwick. We should have such a nitwit for a GM. mbn007
Smith is an excellent GM. The deal he made with teh "conservative" Giants for Manning was a steal of epic proportions, and he had already done that before with Vick. His draft is better than average, as Spermy pointed out above. And Marty never wins in teh post-season, so now, with LT at his prime, why not try someone else, before time runs out? He is far from a nitwit. He is a top tier GM.
bitonti
Good question. Why would a 14-2 team let their assistants walk and then fire the head coach? I wonder that as well. the reason for that is that Marty Schott wanted to hire his brother as DC or something crazy like that.
Sperm Edwards
Smith hated Schottenheimer. Wanted to fire him earlier but the owner wanted him in there. Then both coordinators bolted. But it would have made it difficult to get coordinators in for a lame-duck HC (sound familiar?) so they offered Marty an extension (which he turned down). So they felt it was best to then go with a new HC altogether. Or at least that's how I understood the situation to be.
baamf
everyone assumes that SD wanted to trade Turner Nothing has happened this offseason that proved that - in fact, the SD Chargers did everything they could to keep him why would a 14-2 team trade a key backup for draft picks? I agree, SD believes they are going to make a push next year. Without valuable backups at the key spots they would be taking a big chance (sort of like the Jets in 99 with no good QB backups).... SouthernJet
AJ Smith is a nitwit..thank gawd he's not running the Jets..he will run the Chargers right into the ground. Great point about Michael Turner Jetlag He is actually one of better GMs in league,, virtyually all his moves have been great, draft and trades,,he fleeced Giants in Manning fiasco and his drafts are spot on. AJs problem is the Al Davis syndrome,, he thinks he is MORE than a GM,, he pokes his nose into day to day on field issues and because of such has run off a very good coaching staff.. he hated Marty, but he ran off martys 2 HC/OC replacements before canning Marty,,dumb,, cameron and TE coach who went to Browns as OC.
