4 First Day Picks

We still have 4 obvious needs so I think those need to be addressed if they're not in Free Agency.

1. Right Tackle

2. Cornerback

3. Defensive Line depth (A starter included)

4. Linebacking depth

I expect Depth to be addressed later in Free agency when prices drop. Guys like Peter Sirmon and Chris Draft will be very servicable and cost much less. Look at what Miami just gave Porter.

Why not RG ? If we sign Columbo from Dallas I thinik he will start for sure.

Columbo is a Right Tackle and he would start at RT.

Why not RG? Brandon Moore is young and has played well in my eyes and obviously in the Jets' eyes. I don't know why there is such hatred for him on this message board but, whatever, he isn't going anywhere.

Oh and Smizzy, believe me, I would LOVE to settle the Cornerback situation (see below) in free agency.:)

Defensive line first.

Then BAP, BAP, BAP.

I think Nick Harper will sign with us. Just a hunch.

Tangini has made it clear they want to take the BAP all through the draft, good point Tabor.

Teams draft LB's and hope they turn out like Vilma. Why trade him then ?

because he's not agreat fit for what we're running now and if we can get what we got out of him (a 12th or better) than we don't lose a thing-for a guy who in all honesty, and no matter how much we all love the kid-didn't really do that great last year....

Blalock: Beast at RG and prototype Mangini player. Our line will be one of the best in the league for years to come. He has that nastiness you want in an O-Lineman, he's durable, versatile - there isn't a better first round pick from our position.

Woodley: Great instincts and athleticism. He could be the big time pass rushing LB we're looking for. Would thrive in an attacking role but also has the ability to stuff the run and make plays in space.

Harrell: Has nice size and has the frame to bulk up further. Another versatile player and hard worker. He plays the run well, is a solid tackler and has the quickness to play at the next level.

Wright: He's projected as your typical boom or bust pick. He did run into some trouble at USC, but showed drive and determination when he transferred to UNLV and made the best of a bad situation. I think he could be an excellent player when put in the right locker room (OURS). He has all the tools and could be a steal in the third round with the talent he possesses.

Problem is Harrell should go about 30 picks before that. But I've seen guys drop more than that. Don't know much about Wright (other than your post above & what I've read online) but I'd love this.

I think Harrell should still be there mid-to-late 2nd round, but where he falls is anybody's guess. The 2nd round of this draft is looking like it's where the run on the better DTs of this draft will take place. Now that we sit at the "end of the line", we have to hope that one of these big boys falls to us.

1. Anthony Spencer, OLB, Purdue - Great addition to help our pass rush, very productive his senior season, explosive, solid against the run, good intangibles

2a. Aaron Ross, CB, Texas - good size/speed ratio, playmaker, good run support, good return man

2b. Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii - experience in 3-4, great athlete for his size, good motor, disruptive in the backfield, strong against the run, good intangibles

3. Manuel Ramirez, OG, Texas Tech - extremely strong, a force in the run game, fairly quick, won't get pushed back, team leader with good intangibles

I dont see why people are so against trading vilma? He isn't a good fit for the 3-4 and has a high trade value.

A better nose tackle would help Vilma out a lot. Keep him from getting hit by guards all the time. I wonder, could he play on the outside or is he too small?

3-4 ILB's are expected to handle guards. I don't fault Vilma. He is what he is: an excellent 4-3 MLB with great speed who is playing out of position. But find a better 3-4 nose tackle? Go try to find one. There are what, 5 good ones on planet earth? Go find one, lol. It's a lot easier to find an ILB than a NT.

And welcome to the site.

Despite all that, Vilma is probably our best defensive player talentwise by far. We should keep him because if we trade him I don't think we would get equal value for him

Kerry Rhodes is our best defensive player and it's not that close.

Hey Mike, that's 3. ;)

Vilma wasn't close to our best defender last year. If we were running a 4-3 (which we are NOT, and won't be) then maybe things would be different. But last year, Vilma was not as good as:

Rhodes

Thomas

Dyson

Barton

and he was s a toss-up with DRob and Hobson, who both played well. Maybe you give Vilma the nod over those two because he was also the "QB" of the defense, but once the ball was snapped he was far from special last year.

I know Vilma's performance was mediocre but I mean as overall talent and upside as the best defensively.

Through no fault of his own, Vilma has little upside in this defense. He was as good as he's going to be, since it's not his skill or learning the defense that's lacking. Vilma is simply not going to add 20-25 lbs.
