ON DEFENSIVE: The Jets are loading up on defensive ends, fueling speculation they might use the 4-3 scheme more often than last year. They re-signed DE Bobby Hamilton, cut last week, to a reduced contract. They're negotiating with DE David Bowens (Dolphins).

They seemed pretty intent on the 3-4 last year... what do you think? I think it would help us if we used more multiple fronts, vilma would love this too.

Tanenbaum was on the FAN yesterday and said the reason why he liked the Coleman signing is because Coleman knew the "system". Dallas ran the 3-4. Is Cimini the best the NY Daily News has to offer? Jeez and what exactly fueled his speculation? The intetrest in Bowens and the re-signing of Hamilton? Thank god Cimini is a beat writer and not a detective

4-3 would make me happy.

I was the biggest detractor against going 3-4 on this board,i believe.I couldn't stand the fact that we were making players like Vilma ,D-Rob and Ellis useless,

BUT then I was schooled by a poster whose name i don't remember, sorry,

and I went back to the four game that i do have taped and noticed that they did already use multiple fronts. Many times they lined up with 4 down lineman,B Thomas usually being the guy and it completely changed my opinion.

I think the 3-4 we run is perfect, because it allows for so many disguises,OF COURSE,a la Bellychick,DUH

Sure,Vilma didn't have the solo tackle monster year like 2 years ago,but he was still everywhere.D-Rob,DEFINITELY improved the second half, meaning he began to feel comfortable with the schemes(because let's remember, this is a direct disciple of BB,so the D WILL BE COMPLICATED.and going back to the tapes, which,by the way,I NEVER do stuff like that, but watching the D,that poster put me right back to Earth.

and my last point:

LOOK WHAT IT'S DONE FOR BTHOMAS!

So,now,if you pull up any of my "d" posts from a month ago, you'll start calling me Kerry.lol, but we don't run a 3-4,exactly.We run a "confuse your a$$,you don't know what's happening" defense.

One more year in the system with our guys,I still think we go Defense early in the draft and we're alright.

The 3-4 is what all the great D's over the past 10 years have run... The 4-3 can be KILLED by O's like the Colts, Rams, Pats... You need a scheme... Look at the Steelers D, the Pats D, the Ravens D, I can go on and on... The 3-4 is what we wanna run, we need the right players... Right now we dont have em, but give Mangini 2-3 seasons... We will have a Top Notch D

That is brutal but hysterical.

For the millionith time, Bowens is a freaking OLB in 3-4 scheme...

The reason Bowens is listed as DE is 4-3 scheme was Dolphins' base defense and he never started. He has the exactly same job as former Pats' Banta-Cain. You people talked about Banta-Cain being OLB for Jets and you still talked about Bowens being DE.. Oh Lord!!!

Agreed. Peyton Manning runs all over any other defense except the 3-4, which he only really mastered this year in the playoffs. He couldn't figure it out all those years in the playoffs before, when he played terribly against the Pats and last year against the Steelers. WHen I look at the two schemes, it seems as if the 4-3 is more set and the offense almost knows what to expect. In a 3-4, the offense does not know which linebacker to watch, or if both will blitz. It's more confusing and can wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

If we could scheme and mix a 3-4 in with the occasional 4-3 it would keep offences off balance. I like the potential. Granted this write might be full of crap, but would be exciting

We already do that, along with many other looks...

I'm not a personal fan of the 3-4, never like the LBs rushing, .

Google and guy named Lawrence Taylor and watch some highlights if possible. *

*when you run out of film on the greatest Defensive Player to ever put on pads(who, coincidently was a rushing LB,not vice versa)

there are a few more guys you could pull up:

Derrick Thomas,Shawn Merriman,Junior Seau,(that bird face dude from the old Bills...lol)

there's a bunch, just google "defensive game changers" or "special defensive talents" ....things like that, you get the point.

OK,I'm doing it in a sarcastic way,but I'm just simply disagreeing with your statement,I believe the QB rushing OLB to be the most dangerous weapon a team can have in the game.

They are players who literally CHANGE a game, they DISRUPT QB's offenses, they are anaomalies, which,by the way,I am loving watching BThomas transform, next year he either propels into my favorite jet or slips into "mediocre,"i like you,but you're slightly disappointing" zone. lol

Last year was a major change in system for all the D. Players. SOme caught on quicker then others, some excelled quicker then others. B Thomas is the prime example, but so did Rhodes.

I look for guys like D. Rob and Ellis, as well as Hobson, to take major strides forward this year. Tweak in a few pieces, and the defense will be a top-shelf one.
