The Denver Broncos on Wednesday night won the battle for coveted backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey, with ESPN.com learning the club has reached a contract agreement with the five-year veteran.

Ramsey, 28, will sign a two-year contract worth approximately $5 million, with about $1.5 million in guarantees.

The Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers also were interested in Ramsey, who recently was released by the New York Jets after only one season with the team. Ramsey will become the backup to Denver second-year pro Jay Cutler, and he ostensibly replaces Jake Plummer in that role.

Denver last weekend traded Plummer to Tampa Bay, and the veteran abruptly retired. The Broncos then began exploring their options for a proven veteran to back up Cutler, their first-round choice in 2006, and quickly targeted Ramsey.

The Broncos will be Ramsey's third team in three seasons, but one of the reasons he settled on Denver as his new home is the overall stability of the organization and the chance to settle in with a franchise and coaching staff he respects.

The first-round choice of the Washington Redskins in 2002, Ramsey has played in 34 games, and his r

God bless Denver if Cutler goes down.

Funny thing is, in my opinion, Cutler will be Ramsey in a couple years. Rocket arm, not much of a QB.

IMHO :gay: . I think you'll find out Cutler is a whole different animal. Actually I think ramsey would have turned out differently if Washington hadn't eff'd with his head.

I'm not on the Cutler bandwagon yet. Of the three 1st round QB's he had the best situation to walk into, and didn't do much to distinguish himself.

Cutler

59%

TD/INT 9/5

Win/loss 2/3

Young

51%

TD/INT 19/13 (includes rushing)

Win/loss 8/5

Leinart

56%

TD/INT 13/12

win/loss 4/8

With his running game I would have expected some more wins.

If you weren't impressed with Cutler you obviously never saw him play. He's a stud.

He's already shown he's better than Ramsey, so I doubt that.

And did you see that throw he made against Arizona? I saw that play quite a few times and I still can't believe it.

Cutler is going to be a big time player.

How many QB's come in their rookie year and light it up ? Marino is about it.

QB's usually take half a season just to get used to the speed of the game.

That is probably one of the reasons why Shanahan made the move. He was willing to toss the season in order to get Cutler the time he needed to get used to the pro game.

Denver could be a big time team in 07.

I agree. Cutler will be a solid pro. I believe that he may be teh best Q/B of the ones drafted last year. Just like I felt Rivers was the best Q/B from his draft, over Eli and Ben.

Of course I hope Clemens turns out to be the best.................;)

Cutler is a way better athlete than Ramsey. Not only does he have a better arm he is also much more mobile. I thought Cutler played well for a rookie QB last year. He'll be a franchise QB along with Leinart and Vince Young.

QB is by far the toughest position to learn for an NFL rookie. Outside of Marino and Roethlisberger I can't think of anyone else who played great as a rookie.

Class of 2006 may have the best trio of Qb's since 1983.
