The Patriots continued their offseason spending spree, adding wide receiver Donte' Stallworth to their 2007 haul, a league source told ESPN.com's Michael Smith.

Stallworth will sign a six-year contract. The deal is believed to be worth a little more that $30 million with close to $12 million guaranteed.

Stallworth, who played last season in Philadelphia after being acquired from the New Orleans Saints, also was being courted by the Eagles, Dolphins and Titans.

Stallworth, 28, had 38 catches for 725 yards and five touchdowns for the Eagles in 2006. A first-round choice of the Saints in the 2002 draft, he has 233 career receptions for 3,516 yards and 28 touchdowns in 68 games, including 44 starts.

League and union officials are investigating a Philadelphia Inquirer report that Stallworth is in the NFL's substance-abuse program, sources from both parties told ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli.

Citing unnamed sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday that Stallworth is a participant in the league program, and that he could be subject to suspension if he suffered a repeat violation of its conditions. The newspaper also reported that a breach of the program's confidentiality agreement can warrant a league fine, and NFL and NFL Players Association officials began to seek out possible sources for the leak on Monday.

The Patriots have been busy this offseason, adding coveted linebacker Adalius Thomas, ranked No. 2 on ESPN.com's list of free agents, as well as Dolphins kick returner/receiver Wes Welker, tight end Kyle Brady and backup running back Sammy Morris.

Might give creedence the Patriots are loading up for one last Brady and Belichick run before they both retire.

Congrats, you just paid $12M guaranteed for 6-8 games a year.

Hopefully when the schedule comes out we won't play the pats until late October. If so, we won't have to worry about Stallworth.

He played 12 last year after not missing a game since 2003? He has played in at least 11 games every year of his career.

He doesn't seem a good fit for the pats, who like their receivers to be good route runners and work the short and midfield.

Stallworth is a good deep threat and not much else.

That is what they need.

Welker will give the Patriots what Troy used to in the slot.

Caldwell/Gaffney, who has developed a rapport with Brady can work the short and middle.

It's just unbelievable what the Pats have done so far this offseason. As if obverpaying Thomas and severl overpaying for Welker were not enough now they give $12 mil guaranted to a character risk player who has always had nagging injuries? I know he ahsn't msised alot of agme but much like Santana as a jet he always played we/ nagging injuries that kept him down.

The Pats have turned into he redskins right before our eyes and I am loving every second of it. $12 mil for Stallworth? $10 mil for Welker PLUS 2nd and 7th rd picks? Wow!

If Stallworth's head is right then this will be a good pickup for the Pats.

Big difference between Brady throwing to him then Aaron Brooks.

Stallworth was fine with McNabb until he got hurt.

A bit chancey for the Pats but considering the state of recievers probably worth the shot.

Overpaying for Thomas? How? He took less money then he could have gotten elsewhere (49ers) and he fills a glaring need for the Patriots.

Overpaying for Welker? A late 2nd for a guy that has been in the league for 2 years and has almost 100 receptions. He can catch and return kicks. Yeah, 18 million over 5 years is really throwing money away.

Thomas is a good player but investing $20 mil guaranteed in him is overpaying.

Giving Welker $10 mil guaranteed alone was overpaying, add in 2nd and 7th rd picks and they severely overpaid. Welker has been in the league 3 year, he wasn't good enough on an awful Miami team to play WR in 2004, he has been avreage the last 2 years. yeah he caught 60+ balls lst year but averaged just 10 yds a rec- that's should be a RB's avreage on receptions. he has just ONE receiving TD in his career and as a return man he is below average. He averaged 22 yds on KORs last year ad 9 yds on PRs. That's not good.

Stallworth CAN turn into a great signing but he's very risky giving that much guaranteed money to. That's something NE wouldn't have done in the past. I like the moves they are making as an opposing fan and don't attack saying it's b/c I hate the Pats b/c I have prasied NE more than any non-Pat fan this decade. I respect and admire what they have done(even if I am bitterly jealous) but they are entering Snyder Country w/ this offseason and I am happy to see it.

This is a good move by the Pats.

And once again they match witz with us.

Face it this is not the super bowl Pats any more, the super bowl Pats had a good running game, good wideouts, and a killer D

There running game has fallen to Maroney(2nd year)

There recievers arw getting old.

And there D is getting older by the minute.

And if I hear how great Brusci is ui'll puke

While technically true, you are being intellectually dishonest. Stallworth may have suited up in those games but he didn't really "play" - not really. More than a few of those games he was in & out of the huddle. You're also counting partial games when he got injured & re-injured, or a partial game he didn't start in as full games where he was fully healthy. Or did he have 4 entire games with 0-2 catches because neither McNabb nor Garcia are capable of completing a pass to him?

Why shoot the messenger? AEC said he will be good for 6-8 games a year. I looked at his ESPN player card it says he has played in at least 11 games every year. Why bust my balls? It is not like I said we signed Jerry Rice.

Maybe an Eagles fan can enlighten us on how he did with the Eagles. Maybe he was better suited for Donovoan (i.e. stretching the field) then Garcia? I do not know, but 3 of those 4 games you are talking about happened with Garcia so you can do the math.

Contract Details according to PFT.

Instead, a league source tells us that it's a one-year deal with an option for a second year, and then an option for four more years.

In year one, Stallworth gets $1 million to sign, a workout bonus of $300,000, a base salary of $700,000, and a $1.6 million roster bonus payable if he makes the 53-man roster at the start of the reason.

Stallworth also can earn up to $400,000 in incentives. He'll get $100,000 if he catches 70 passes, another $100,000 if he catches 75 passes, another $100,000 if he catches 80 passes, and $100,000 if he is on the Pro Bowl team.

A $6 million option bonus is due shortly before the start of the 2008 league year, but after the deadline for designating franchise players. This requires the team to either pick up the option, or to allow Stallworth to hit the market unfettered by the franchise tag.

In 2008, there's also a $2 million roster bonus due on the first day of the league year, a $400,000 workout bonus, a $1 million base salary, and a $1.6 million roster bonus payable if he makes the season-opening 53-man roster.

In 2009, there's a $2 million option bonus, payable after the franchise tag deadline but before the start of the league year. If the option is exercised, the deal runs through 2012.

Also in 2009, Stallworth will receive a $400,000 workout bonus, a $1 million base salary, and a $1.6 million roster bonus based on making the season-opening 53-man roster.

In 2010 through 2012, the deal has the same terms in each year: $500,000 workout bonus and $4 million salary.

In all, it's a one-year $3.6 million deal that can be worth up to $4 million, or a two-year, $14.6 million deal that can be worth as much as $15 million, or a three-year, $19.6 million deal that can be worth as much as $20 million.

The Pats can then add on additional years at $4.5 million each, with a maximum contract value of $33.5 million.

But the only truly guaranteed money is $1 million. Not $12 million.

I think that the trade for Thomas Jones pretty much seals our spot in last place for 2007.

Seems to me BB is setting NE up for 1 last run before he retires so he can stay home and kick his dog around.

Problem for NE is that will leave them in a deep hole afterwards and chances are the last run may never happen.

Might as well just hang it up for the season if that's really your view. :vactiontime:Just curious... Does this mean we won't be seeing you or your twin Michael Scotts for the rest of the year? Talk about being negative !!
