SouthernJet
To keep the other Current Movie Review Thread shorter I have added a thread for movies out of theaters but available to rent/buy. UPDATED!!!! In BOLD/RED. 4's VERY, VERY Highly Recommended: Last King of Scotland (Whitaker steals movie, but a great flick that takes you through a 3rd world countries realization that it may never be normal. This is the true story of Dr. who befriended Ugandad dictator Idi Amin). The Departed (The Godfather for this generation) The Queen (cant miss, great flick) Little Miss Sunshine (shows that all you need is a great script) 31/2's Children of Men (A great sc-fi movie which is Hard to find these days. Has a great gritty feel to it and is like some reviews have mentioned, this generations BladeRunner.) Rocky (Wow, really surprised me, went back to telling a story instead of being a sequel) Casino Royale (Bond goes back to Sean Connery-era ruthlessness) 3's Highly recommended: Little Children (very differently paced, with eerie narration effect. Shows how fast and for seemingly little reason sometimes, things can spiral out of control) Deep Sea 3D IMAX (Stunning IMAX 3 D presentation. I have seen many of these IMAX's since I have one down the street, and this is one of the finest as far as visuals, 3D effects and overall keepoing your interest. Hey parents, do your parenting thing, and take your kid to see this instead of another dribble animated movie from the big Movie Houses. Educate and entertain, you may actually change a kid's life with one of these movies. Notes on a Scandal (Incredible acting performances. It will come down to Dench and Mirren for Oscar. The plot is from todays headlines and is quite compelling. Deep Sea 3D IMAX (Stunning IMAX 3 D presentation. Educate and entertain, you may actually change a kid's life with one of these movies. Flags of our Fathers (maybe went a bit long, but a very good peek at what war does after the smoke clears) Babel (taut drama that shows how we can not control anything at times) Pursuit of Happyness (Will Smiths best acting job ever. Forced scenes to speed things up, but a very good defeating all odds movie) Dreamgirls (not a big movie-musical fan, but this was a good story that included great music) 21/2's Deja Vu (Denzel does a good joib carrying this halfway decent scifi/murder thriller. As in all Scifi's, it gets a little whacky in plot department. Apocalypto (I went in expecting to see a historical drama and found out it was a balls to the walls chase movie. Maybe the best pure chase movie ever. Highly violent.) The Painted Veil (third screen version of W. Somerset Maugham's novel of passion and forgiveness set in preWWII China. Great date movie, very romantic) The Prestige (predictable but well acted) Borat (most men like it (was better than the repetitive Jackass), most women dislike it) Blood Diamond (30 minutes too long) 2's Recommended Entertainment that wont win a Oscar, but a enjoyable evening: Music and Lyrics (Very nicely paced romantic comedy. These movies are never blockbusters but if made properly they make great date movies. Drew Barrymore does most of the heavy lifting here and basically carries movie). Volver (definitly a womans movie, all the way. It was good, but sometimes the cultural differences made it seem somewhat naiive to a American mindset.) The Illusionist (Very much like the Prestige) The Holiday ( If you liked 'Love Actually', then immediately go see this) The Nativity Story (modern retelling, very historically correct) Boynton Beach Club (if you are over 50 you will chuckle) Night at the Museum (enjoyable, formula fare. Great for families. If you liked Jumanji you will love this.) The Good Sheperd (great look at the origins of the CIA and some of its early escapades. At same time telling effect it had on personal lives) 1 Save your money and time, Pretty Bad: Alpha Dog (kind of gets lost in trying to be too cool)

The Black Dahlia was pretty good new Bond is back to the 60s aka Sean Connery,, a spy who doesnt really kid around much and will kill you with the drop of a hat. Black Dahlia was ok with me,, if you liked that genre film, you will love Zodiac, The Breach or Children of Men..all better flicks.

See above 1st post in thread for Rental reviews for this weeks releases of 'Notes on a Scandal' and 'The Last King of Scotland' thanks, I haven't seen notes on a scandal. i'll check it out. I kinda watched freedom writers but fell asleep. It just wasn't gripping enough for me & seemed like a typical teacher up against tough students flick. Bugg
"Black Dahlia"-I read everything Ellory has ever written. He is simply the best writer of crime fiction in this country. But other than "LA Confidential"(which Ellory helped adapt) they never seem to get it right. "King of Scotland"-looking forward to this in PPV/HD. joewilly
Updated for The Queen and Deja Vu. the mrs & I watched deja vu this weekend. I gotta watch it again. I'm a techno idiot & my wife put in the dvd while I showered & when I came out she thought the movie was screwed up. the directors name along with a bunch of others kept comin on screen. long story short we turned a 90 minute flick into a 2 hour flick somehow & didn't know it at the time. she kept sayin what a stupid way to film a movie & I wouldn't let her fast forward or skip to the next scene for fear of missing something. we asked our son the next day, he laughed & said we had it on directors version or something like that. what a shame cause it was a brilliant flick imo. Black Dahlia was hands down the worst movie I've seen this year, maybe the worst I've seen in 10 years. If it wasn't for the eye candy of Scarlett Johansonn I would have never made it through the movie. I love it when a movie3 is so bad that they actually have to take 10 minutes at the end to explain the whole thing. That was just aweful.

Jet Moses
"King of Scotland"-looking forward to this in PPV/HD. It's a great movie. After it was over, it made me think about the mess that South Africa has become. I recall 10-20 years ago, the cause celeb was Apartheid and Nelson Mandela was the poster child of the left. I remember the video "I ain't gonna play Sun City"... I wonder if Bruce Springsteen ever once bothered to look in his rear view mirror at the human wreckage left in the wake of all his smarmy do goodism- he and and all the other left wing brats. I doubt it. They moved on to something more dujour, and dropped South Africa like a hot potato.

I doubt it. They moved on to something more dujour, and dropped South Africa like a hot potato. I saw it on PPV. A great movie. I could've done without the scene with hiw wife on the .... Forest Whitaker deserved the Oscar. To play a complete sociopath as a nice guy was a feat. The guy who played the Scot doctor, Jmaes Mcevoy, deserved some credit too. Seemed like half of Gillian Anderson's part as the love interest was cut, but still a great flick. Guys like Springsteen, talented as they may be, never care about stuff like that. Apartheid was an awful racist thing. But compared to many of the tyrants in Africa then and now-Amin then and Mugabe now, or pretty much the entirety of the eastern half(Somalia, Darfur, Ethiopia)-Sun City was a 4th of July picnic. I don't understand the left's ideas about the awfulness of Darfur. Do we hold concerts, or use soldiers shooting actual missiles and bullets to kill bad guys? Not saying they don't have a point, but what do you really do? If all it is is another chance for some fake compassion in the form of colorful ribbons, there's no point. jetophile
The United Nations sucks major f*cking balls. Giving 'time lines' on genocide (the Sudan), disinfection from top to bottom, those useless, paycheck cashing sc*mbags with "diplomatic" status need to have massive coronaries at the same time. I need not say more.
