#90
Who cares about results? "He looked like he was free and easy," Torre said, "and that's what I care about. I didn't really care about results. I just liked how he looked."
Maxman
Who cares about results? "He looked like he was free and easy," Torre said, "and that's what I care about. I didn't really care about results. I just liked how he looked." Did you ever play baseball? Why would anyone care about spring training results? What Joe said is 100% accurate. I assume he was talking about Pavano but I don't know. If so what he said makes sense. Who cares that he gave up 2 runs. Did he have command? Was he in any pain? If the answer is no to both -- then you should be happy. (Probably Pavano). If he is throwing without hurting a fingernail or tearing his tampon then the day was a success.

Barton
Sheff. has a serious case of diarreah of the mouth. I can't take anything he says with any degree of seriousness. This should be Joe's last year, win or lose. I'd like to see Joe Girardi come in next year. He knows what how to deal with young pitching and we'll have quite a few coming into the majors in the upcoming years. I like Mattingly, the players say they love him, but that doesnt make him managing material. Not saying he isnt, but Girardi already has proven he knows how to do it. Girardi got fired after 1 season. I like Joe. I like him a lot. But I think all that he has truly proven is that he knows how to piss off upper management. I do think he will be a very good manager though.
Maxman
March 14, 2007 -- TAMPA - An executive whose team is interested in acquiring Carl Pavano said yesterday he does not believe the Yankees will trade the righty this spring. Nevertheless, the team scouted Pavano's Monday start against Boston and reported a positive outcome. "He was free and easy, which is a big deal considering his injury history,'' the executive said. "His fastball was good, better than anticipated." Hey 90 -- Joe isn't the only one.
Mavrik
If Torre was saying this, say, during the Division series, I might find reason to get pissed off if I was a Yankee fan. But it's spring training, and spring training for the most part, doesn't mean s***.

But it's spring training, and spring training for the most part, doesn't mean s***. Padre Joe was too busy panicking in the ALDS to say anything at all. Once again, this A-rod/Jeter stupidity will fester. A true "manager of egos"-his supposed forte-would sit everyone down, thell them to STFU and play and simply support each in the press, period. Padre Joe won't do that. So given his piss poor managerial skills in this, why is he here? He'll burn out his bullpen and baby his starters again. He'll get all shaky when the A-rod stories crop up again. And the Yankees will likely cash and burn in the postseason again. And if they face a guy CHEATING, Torre won't raise the issue because he's too nice a guy. Just effin' swell. I don't understand-Hughes gets 5 minutes in big camp and a one way ticket back to Wilkes-Barre. So we can further delay Torre's h-effing him until later in the year. Swell! I'd prefer Girardi over Mattingly, but either would be an improvement.
Maxman
I do agree that Torre needs to end this ARod stuff. If Jeter has to be bitch slapped in the process so be it. But let's be done with this. ARod hasn't hit in the clutch. But he has done EVERYTHING that has been asked of him to be here. Let's give the guy some slack. The only reason he isn't known as the greatest SS of all time is because he switched to be a Yankee. That has to count for something. Just end the silliness already and concentrate on winning some games.

He's on an innings count, and thats an organizational move, not Torre's, so I do not fault him on this at all. We dont want another Mark Prior on our hands with Phil. Kid is still very young, especially for a pitcher. At the most, give him a midseason call up. Give him some extra time to develop his reportoire in the minors. AFJF
This is just another silly Yankee bashing thread. In the 20+ years that I've been watching baseball I've never heard a manager show concern about the spring training results of pitcher coming off of a season and a half on the DL. If the guy stays healthy and gets some work in...mission accomplished. Statements made about a pithchers results are practically given to every team in baseball by MLB. It's always about "mechanics" and "how I felt out there" and never about results in a guys first couple of outing. Now if Pavano gets lit up throughout the duration of ST we'll have a different situation on our hands.
AFJF
Apparently an MLB executive scouting Pavano and the baseball writers from the Post are starting to sound like Herm too. Or do they just sound like people who know what they're talking about? Hmmmm.. "His fastball was good, better than anticipated." The report also was that Pavano threw his slider and splitter well on occasion in allowing two runs in three innings. Perhaps most important is that the righty reported no physical issues yesterday.
