Jets, QB Tuiasosopo reach an agreement

Veteran to compete for backup job

Thursday, March 22, 2007

BY DAVE HUTCHINSON

Star-Ledger Staff

The Jets have reached an agreement in principle with unrestricted free-agent quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo and a deal could be in place by the end of the week, according to someone with knowledge of the discussions.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

Tuiasosopo, who has played all six of his seasons with the Oakland Raiders, visited the Jets at the start of free agency this month. He also visited the Panthers and Browns.

The Jets, who released Patrick Ramsey earlier this month, were looking for a quarterback with NFL experience to challenge second-year pro Kellen Clemens for the backup job to starter Chad Pennington. Tim Rattay (Tampa Bay) and Anthony Wright (Bengals) were among those on the Jets' short list.

Tuiasosopo, who turns 28 today, was a second-round pick of the Raiders in 2001 out of the University of Washington. He has only two career starts, including a start against the Jets on Dec. 11, 2005. He completed 14 of 28 passes for 124 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a 26-10 loss at Giants Stadium.

Overall, Tuiasosopo, 6-1, 220 pounds, has completed 48 of 88 career passes for 550 yards with two touchdowns and seven interceptions. Last season, he completed six of 13 passes for 68 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in two games.

The Jets feel Clemens, who played in just two games last season (0-for-1 with four sacks) in mop-up duty, is the heir apparent to Pennington but they wanted someone with NFL experience to challenge him in training camp. Clemens was a second-round pick (49th overall) out of Oregon last April.

Texans: Houston is close to acquiring Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons.

A trade for the highly regarded backup quarterback was expected to be announced today, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who requested anonymity because the deal hadn't been completed.

The person did not disclose the details of the trade. The Houston Chronicle and the NFL Network said the Falcons will get second-round picks in 2007 and 2008 and that the teams will swap first-round picks this year, with Atlanta moving from 10th to eighth.

A call by The Associated Press to Texans general manager Rick Smith wasn't immediately returned yesterday. Rich McKay, Atlanta's general manager, had no comment.

The acquisition of Schaub would make it unlikely that David Carr -- the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft -- will remain with the Texans.

Eagles: Coach Andy Reid will return from a temporary leave of absence tomorrow, five weeks after leaving the team while his two oldest sons face legal troubles.

Reid took a leave of absence on Feb. 12, after his two oldest sons became embroiled in legal troubles stemming from separate traffic incidents on Jan. 30.

Thanks for the post Mike. I personnally liked Rattay as a backup but if the Jets reached an agreement with Tuiasosopo thats great. I'm sure the $$ was just right for our needs for an additional QB. The deal with Atlanta's Schaub was good for everybody. He gets the chance to start, Houston gets a decent QB that Kubiak can work with and Atlanta gets some draft choices that they would not have gotten when Schaub walked after the season as a UFA.

I dont see Tuiasosopo presenting much of a challenge for Clemens. 2 TDs and 7 INTs for his whole career.....yikes.

If we are going to bring in complete GARBAGE, we could have just kept Ramsey.

Ramsey >>> Tuiasosopo

Yeah but Im sure Ramsey was going to cost more.... and for a 3rd QB you want the cheapest one you can find who can throw a ball...

This guy played HORRIBLE against our 2005 defense in the, Al Davis making sure the Jets don't get Reggie Bush, game. This guy is a scrub and it will surprise me if he can even stay on the roster as the #3 guy by the time camp breaks and the season begins.

Marques Tuiasosopo will surprise us all. He is similar in style (and, unfortunately, in ability and stature) to Brooks Bollinger. But, if he has to play in a game the offense will be adjusted to fit his skills, unlike when Herm packed it in and completely undermined Bollinger and the Jets. Its a decent signing.

Tuiasosopo is a great athlete and I think in this system he could be very good. At one point scouts were very high on him as a prospect. He will certainly give the unproven Clemens a run for is money and iomo is a better prospect than Ramsey is at this point.

I have to concur with 124-the guy is friggin HORRID and I too doubt he is even wearing a Jets uniform come late August.

The good news though is this; He's already helped us win a game in his career

This is a puzzling to me-an experienced QB was needed to complete the roster but Tuiaososopo is terrible.

Clemens should have no trouble being the second string QB at least with this competition.

one would hope faba...or we're in deeper trouble at the QB position than any of us could have ever imagined

What are we thinkin' with signing this Scrub, I would rather have Vinny than this kid.

and vinny is as old as dirt itself.I didn't want ramsey here and now his gone ,for what? to bring in some body that is just as bad if not worse.I hope this kid doesn't see the field at all this year.

don't worry Mike he ain't even making through August

I think any poster on this board would be a better QB then this scrub. He must be smart tough and hardworking though so it's all ok. And people wonder why I'm skeptical about this FO...

come on mike. do you really want smizzy standing directly behind a bent over mangold. this could have some real negative implications for mangold for a long time.

I'd rather be entertained by that then watch tuiasogarbage and feel like throwing up...

this is fantastic news. it obviously means tangini believes that kellen is the real deal. we should be happy the team didn't feel a need to grab someone like carr.

thats kinda the impression I got. I'm not gonna get too riled up over a back up q'back.

I think it may send a confidence in clemons signal more than anything

...but he has to be good. He's a 2nd round draft pick!

What the hell is wrong with you people?! You are freaking out about a third string QB. What third string QB is actually good? The Jets just wanted insurance if two qbs go down and it won't cost a lot. Damn some of you people just like to bitch for no reason and act like the worlds going to end.

Some facts to consider about 3rd string QBs:

1. They rarely play.

2. If they do play the team they play for has suffered some kind of disaster and can probably write off the season as a whole.

3. Because of 1&2 they are pretty interchangable. How often does the third string QB make a difference between going to the playoffs and not?

4. Because of 1,2,and 3 the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on them.

Ramsey was due a big roster bonus that was probably more than the Jets are going to pay Tui for the season.

Plus, the move proves that the coaching staff has faith in Clemens as the back up and heir apparant.

This is a good thing. Calm down

That's how I'm reading this also. Clemens is the man, backing up Chad, this guy is insurance only. I doubt he sees a snap after the 3rd pre-season game.
