GimmeShelter
It will be interesting to see whether the young arms fill the void if the injury lasts longer or if they throw the payroll out of whack again on Clemens. Reportedly Pavano may be the opening day starter with Pettite(back spasms) and Wang hurting. Moose would have to move his next pre-season start up a day to be on schedule for opening day and he hates to mess with his routine in any fashion. (From the NYPOST) Cashman said the Yankees have depth and choices. He has to say that and yes they do have more young arms than in the past. Jeff Karstens has been pitching well, but do you really want to put a $194 million payroll in the hands of starters like Karstens, Carl Pavano and Kei Igawa. Those three starters combined for all of 42 2/3 major-league innings pitched last season and two wins, that's 346 fewer victories than Clemens has in his career. Those two wins belonged to Karstens, who was 2-1 in eight games with the Yankees. Igawa was in Japan, of course, and Pavano was in Year II of being a lost pitching soul. Lieber, the odd man out in the Phillies rotation would be a decent acquisition but he pulled a oblique muscle yesterday.

Bugg
The answers to this mess are-"Who is Philip Hughes?" and "can Joe Torre be stopped from making another mess of a season by jerkinga rounf a young pitcher and wearing out his bullpen?". The Yankees can score runs, but they need another ace, and even mroe so if Wang isn't ready. But Torre wants to jerk around his usual collection of bottomfeeders at the end of the bullpen bench. So figure by around July 1, they'll then bring in Clemens and Hughes or both in total panic, followed by Hughes facing enormous pressure when Torre yanks him out the first time he gives up a single in ther 5th, so Ron Villone/Mike Myers, et al can fill their all-important roles. It pisses me off to no end; Torre caught Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton(I know, Mccarvver was his personal, blah. blah, blah)-guys who intended to go 9 every time they took the mound. And now manages like he never met either and thinks a starter should go 5. And then wonders why guys like Paul Quantrill and Scott Proctor have their arms hanging off come October . Get ready for a slow motion replay of 2006-playoff berth, bullpen abuse on a grand scale, early elimination at the hands of a team with young pitching, recriminations and A-rod nonsense all year(because Padre Joe cannot be bothered, I dunno, doing his job). This is a recording.
Bugg
Actually playoff wins are a team stat just like wins during the season. Having watched Beckett outpitch Pettitte in game 6 in 2003 from the stands, and game 7 of the 2003 ALCS from the upper deck with Mo laying everything he had on the line for 3 innings, you , my Sabermetric pal, are simply wrong. BTW, Julian Tavarez is complete garbage. You should be laughed at for that...those of us that don't go by one adjustment year (or should I say, half-adjustment year) performance know all that Josh Beckett brings to the table. Nothing against Wang at all, but both young pitchers have habits of being not durable and erratic at times with location. Beckett throws harder and is more experienced...lest we forget it was him who COMPLETELY THREW THE ENTIRE NEW YORK YANKEE ORGANIZATION DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS ON 3 DAYS REST in the clinching game of the World Series when Chin-Ming-Overrated has yet to sniff a real big game. AFJF
This actually isn't a huge deal IMO. The first month of the season...so we're saying Wang will miss four or five starts with the off days. Add to that the it's not an arm issue in which case it would be serious cause for alarm.

The first month of the season...so we're saying Wang will miss four or five starts with the off days. Add to that the it's not an arm issue in which case it would be serious cause for alarm. Yeah but with Pettitte and now Karstens ailing slightly maybe to much concern was paid to the Mets staff by the Yankee fan this off season. Who'd a thought Pavano would pitch opening day. LAKELAND, Fla. -- Yankees right-hander Jeff Karstens left his start against the Tigers on Sunday after two innings with stiffness in his pitching elbow. "I didn't want to push it too much and have something really [bad] happen," the 24-year-old said. Karstens is making a bid to secure a spot as the fifth starter in the Yankees' rotation, which already suffered one major blow this weekend when ace Chien-Ming Wang strained his right hamstring Friday during conditioning exercises. Karstens threw 46 pitches in his start against Detroit, allowing six runs on six hits in two innings, including a three-run homer to Gary Sheffield. Karstens said he revealed the injury to catcher Todd Pratt after the second inning, before informing manager Joe Torre and pitching coach Ron Guidry. "I never really got loose," Karstens said. "Anytime you've got something wrong, it kind of worries you a little bit." Karstens said that he only recalled having elbow problems once before, as a freshman in high school. Then, Karstens suffered bone chips in his growth plate -- an injury which painfully restricted him from everyday activities. He said the sensations he felt Sunday were more stiffness than pain. With the Yankees preparing their staff for Opening Day on April 2, Karstens said it would be disappointing to suffer a setback this late in camp, but said he understood the situation. "If I'm not 100 percent healthy, I can't really help them anyway," Karstens said

I'm pretty sure it was actually during the season last year when I said Wang was better than Beckett........ Interesting to hear that about Karstens. I was wonder WTF happened to this 91 mph fastball I heard he was throwing. He looked like garbage out there today - at least we know know it was a injury type thing hopefully not to serious. The Yankees might get their butts whooped by Kazmir opening day, but I hope we can squeeze out a win. I still cant facking believe he was traded for victor zambrano, damn I wish the Yankees would have gotten in on that.
