Green Jets & Ham
Gotta carry Phelps as the backup 1B, he's absolutely killing the ball this spring and he's destroying Phillips as well But that aside, Manky is a light-hitting 1B, All Glove and No Stick, so his backup should be the opposite, someone you can install in the late innings for offense if the team is behind, someone who can perhaps pop one out of the yard, and that can't be Giambi because he'll already be in the lineup as the DH .. that has to be Josh Phelps, he can give you that dimension off the bench if the Yankees are behind, while Phillips is just another Manky without the Gold Glove IMO the only way Phillips wins this job over Phelps is if Torre is playing favorites, because this competition has been a rout {for Phelps} at the dish JOSH PHELPS ========== .483 BA 3 HR's 10 RBI .472 OBP .750 SLG ANDY PHILLIPS =========== .190 BA 0 HR's 0 RBI .190 OBP .190 SLG Comments? Barton
I was at the game today, Phelps launched a long home run to straight center field, very impressive. He's hitting over .400 in the spring with a few homers too. Torre should be fired if he takes Philips over Phelps, really.

If this was really a fair compeition, it's no contest, it's Phelps in a rout, an absolute blowout And I would argue if it's about taking the right complimentary player {see above}, Phelps wins that battle too Heck, if he keeps tearing the cover off the ball like this, I'D START PHELPS and sit Manky's @$$ on the pine .. bring him in late for defense .. at least until Phelps cools off

What pissed me off today at the game, aside from giambi, jeter, damon, arod and matsui all not playing, was Doug Mientiewicz not getting any time. Doug says he needs at bats to get going.......yet Torre still put Philips out there at first base and Phelps at DH? For what reason exactly? Is it not clear that Phelps should make the team over Andy? Get Doug his at bats, idiot.

Or maybe Torre is actually considering the alternative I mentioned, STARTING PHELPS and using Manky as a late innings defensive replacement? But more likely you're right, Torre is trying like heck to find some reason to justify Phillips over Phelps
Scott Dierking
Met fans are starting to get that feeling with Milledge over Shawn Green as a starter. The kid has seemingly busted his butt to show that he is not the ****-sure type, has a great spring, only to see Gren muddle along and get the job. Gotta pay your dues, I guess. Man, Shawn Green and Luis Gonzalez just fell off the face of all stardom. Makes you wonder what those guys were doing.

But this is not even like that, Scotty .. this is not showing deference to a former All-Star or 40+ HR Guy .. this is not saying the veteran will hit when it matters .. Andy Phillips is NOT Shawn Green .. never has been and never will be .. Andy Phillips is JAG, at best, that's being generous, so there should be no deference in this battle TRUTH IS, Phelps has always been a better player than Phillips, he's always had some pop in his bat, if only for that one dimension he's been a better player than Phillips .. Phillips only claim to fame is a decent glove, maybe above average, but that's what Manky is for, so there's really no justification for keeping Phillips over Phelps, none whatsoever This one is a slam-dunk from every conceivable angle .. the battle has been one-sided, Phillips has no track record that deserves deference, and Phelps is the better fit to boot .. this should be a slam-dunk

He shouldnt sniff a roster spot. (just checked, Philips finished the game going 0 for 4 with 4 strike outs!) I heard about his Mom being sick, and I like Andy and all, but lets keep it real. He shouldnt make this team or even be considered.
madmike1
As i've been saying for months, Josh Pehlps is BY FAR the best 1B the yankees have right now and he should be starting at 1B every game. Good too see others coming around to agree with me...

I'm with you Mike I don't know why Josh Phelps was looking for a home, had to accept a minimum camp invite, he always scared me as a hitter with the Blue Jays .. I'm not saying he's great, but he's a little scary because he can crush a mistake .. that's a nice #9 hitter, someone who can do some occasional damage, sort of protects the 7 and 8 Guys Anyway, I agree, I'd start Phelps and use Manky's Glove for late innings defense IMO Manky is too much of a liability with the stick to be a starter, he's virtually an automatic out, he's a late innings defensive replacement guy

Shouldn't surprise anyone that baltimore is the team that lets a guy like this walk considering the way that franchise is run.

Oh I would have backed you to the hilt on this one, Mike .. that signing made no sense too me unless it was for a late innings defensive replacement .. this guy is DEFINITELY NOT starting material .. he's a late innings defensive replacement guy, that and nothing else .. awful, awful offensive player I'm with you 100% .. Phelps should start and Manky for defense
