Green Jets & Ham
Josh Phelps is coming north! I feel bad for Andy, what with his mom being sick, but Phelps made this a no brainer, he won this job in a rout .. and a few other roster tidbits {link below} http://www.nj.com/yankees/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1175146037160840.xml&coll=1 Looks like Villone is out too
madmike1
Yeah we knew this a few days ago. I'd bet Phillips clears waivers too. That will help the Scranton Yankee team at least...

BTW Mike, if you read Torre's comments {about how comfortable Phelps is verses lefties}, I think he'll start Phelps on opening day verses Kazmir I can see a platoon at 1B developing early, or at least a semi-platoon where Phelps gets the nod verses the tougher lefties like Kazmir Just a hunch

Phelps needs to play every day until they get a real 1B in here.

GimmeShelter
and we care cause of?????????? this just in Felix Millan making a comeback with Mets at 60!!!!!!!!!! LOL...yes the Yankees back-up 1B situation is big news. I like Phelps potential though--- power wise. BTW, didn't Felix cost us the 73 series by allowing a ground ball to go through his legs against Oakland?

Right you are. Phelps earned his spot this Spring, no 2 ways about it. But his history is not good when he does not play on a regular basis. I realize Menky is a far superior defensive asset, and this lineup should not need a big bat at 1B, but Phelps playing more often, at least against all lefty starters, and against other teams lower portion of the rotation righties, may be a bigger help to the Yankees. It will balance the lineup a lot more (righty/lefty) and will keep Phelps in the groove, for when you really need him. Any goes to AAA, IMO. I would be surprised if he is claimed. But I doubt he plays 1B on a regular basis. With Eric Duncan there, and probably Shelly there also, Phillips may be at 3B, or moved to the OF. My guess would be a fill-in at many positions, including 1B and DH, as well as 3B and OF. Not a regular in any one spot. But I will bet that if Phelps is struggling come June, Andy is back up here. GimmeShelter
Courtesy of CBS Sportsline Storyline: Brian Cashman has remade the Yankees. He has changed the culture in The Bronx, you see, by trading a few veterans and slashing the payroll to a thrifty $182 million. He's attempting to develop players internally and dabbling with Rule-5 guys like Josh Phelps. And he's making Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada wait until their current contracts expire before offering them new ones. Outrageous! Nobody in the history of baseball has ever done anything like this. Is it too late to get Cashman's face -- "Cash" to his media pals -- on the new "forever" postage stamp? Instead try: Josh Byrnes has remade the Diamondbacks. Never mind the short-term fixes in the rotation. Byrnes has stocked his roster with the game's highest-upside assortment of young players (Chris Young, Stephen Drew, Justin Upton et al) and hasn't been afraid to exile hometown heroes (Luis Gonzalez -- don't call us, we'll call you) in order to free up playing time for the kids. If they find young pitching to match, watch out.
