faba
Andrea Thompson LiveScience Staff Writer LiveScience.com Wed Apr 4, 2:01 PM ET The New York Yankees will win a whopping 110 games this season, more than any other major league team, according to a mathematician who applies math to real-life situations. The projection comes from a model that Bruce Bukiet of the New Jersey Institute of Technology developed and has used and updated for the past six years to predict how many games each team will win during the 162-game season. So far, Bukiet is on track. The Yankees won their season opener against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Monday. They go against Tampa Bay in Yankee Stadium again this afternoon. How it works Bukiet

Sharrow
He might have something with batting the pitcher 8th instead of 9th. If the new 9th hitter got on base at a decent average, it would be more likely to have a guy on base and fewer outs for the top of your lineup. I'm probably missing something, you'd have to look at a lot more factors than just that idea. The fact that no current NL managers are doing that must mean something. Sharrow
Great avatar Sharrow. Your 8th and 9th inning guys look good. Pittsburgh bullpen so far: 10 innings, 5 hits, 0 walks, 1 run. I just hope I can update it a few times before it doesn't look so good anymore.
green_blood
hey, everyone leave pittsburgh alone, i have $5 on them making the playoffs. but, come on, math can't predict baseball, come on 110 wins? most yankee fans that don't have their head stuck up their ass(well, all yankee fans do, but some are able to see daylight once in a while) know that this yankee team is INCAPABLE of getting to 100. the pitching is a joke, igawa is a waste, pavano will lose his toe because he stubbed it and the yanks are almost depending on clemens going to play for them. oh yeah, the centerfielder throws like a girl and your third baseman is a closet hawthorne heights fan. oh yeah, your owner has cottage cheese for a brain. Mavrik
I'm sure the Mathematician forgot to add that he believed the Yanks would still get bounced from the ALDS after those 110 wins.

GimmeShelter
I wonder if the New Jersey Institute of Technology factored in the current problem of Yankee starters not being able to go 5 innings along with pedestrian middle relief. While early, it appears too many of us were concerned with the wrong NY pitching staff this off season. On a serious note , Andy looked like he will be just fine but what the hell was Posada doing behind the plate last night? The DRays should trade one of those young OF's for pitching. Easily could have taken two games with better middle relief.
