I am going to be moving and am considering switching to Verizon FIOS for internet, and cable service . Does anyone have it ? I'm just wondering how it stacks up against Optimum . Also , I heard that once you switch to fiber-optics , you can't switch back to

Optimum . Is that true ? Any help would be greatly appreciated .

There are a couple of threads where this is mentioned. The answers is an unqualified YES that FIOS is a superior service that Optimum Online in every way that I can see.

(1) Firstly it is faster even over the exaggerated speeds that you get from the Optimum "Boost" service. The big difference as far as advertized speeds go is on the upload side. On a practical level there does not seem to be any variation is the quality of service which does happen with optimum.

(2) Your bandwidth is not shared with your neighbor who may be downloading porn (or the latest Jets HD torrent). When FIOS sells you a 20/5 plan then those are the capacities you really get.

(3) As far as I know, Verizon does not get annoyed if you actually use the bandwidth. This was a biggie for me. If you do significant uploading for whatever reason. Torrent or others P2P. Or work. Then Cablevision WILL THROTTLE your service down to the lowest DSL speed without warning and without notice that they have actually done it. The reason that do this is becuase you are on a loop and they can only advertize those speeds if most people do not use them. When you call up about this as I did, they connect you to the "security department" and make you promise to not abuse the system before they unthrottle you. It turns out that in the sneaky language of their service agreement that they are not actually selling you that capacity, they are selling you the ability to use "up to" that speed, but if you do so it can constitute an abuse of their network.

Incidentally this throttling technology introduces an aditional filter which can affect lag in games.

Finally, To steal a line from The Waterboy.... Cablevision and the Dolans are the DEVIL !!!

One "freebie" that i did not realize I was getting is that for customers who subscribe to two of the three movie packages (HBO, Showtime or Cinamax), you get on demand movies for those channels for free. Assuming the movie has premiered already.
