Jet/BosoxFan
Michael Young is one of the better players in the game and he didnt stand a chance against Papelbon. He couldnt touch his late-moving fastball. These hitters look perplexed against him, as well they should. He is the perfect closer. There is nobody in the game today who can match Papelbon's dominance!!! And he came in and saved the Red Sox from certain doom when Gascan Piniero tried his best to give the game away. I dont know why Piniero was let anywhere near the gem of a game that Dirty Curtie threw. There is nobody that is as dominant as JP.

Jet/BosoxFan
?? I guess Rivera isnt the best closer in history. I knew someone was gonna post this! Im just SHOCKED at how soon it was. I said "at this point in the game" not "at this point in history". Mariano is a wonderful closer, probably the best ever. But we aint talking about the last 11 years! We're talking about NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Jonathan Papelbon is awesome! Thats all this thread is about. Go start a Mariano Rivera thread if you want to verbally perform fellatio on him. Thor99
Not to mention, another nice start from a Sox starter, Papi is waking up, and the Yankees are tied with Tampa. All is right with the world.
madmike1
Not to mention, another nice start from a Sox starter, Papi is waking up, and the Yankees are tied with Tampa. All is right with the world. How about that boston offense. Ortiz won't hit 2 homers every game and 2/3 of their lineup is PUTRID. You won't win many games scoring only 3 runs. And while paplebon was awesome in the game last night, if the rest of your crap bullpen is gonna force him to throw 2 innings every time out it's gonna put him right back on the DL. I think you should be a little more concerned with your teams starting pitching and the wearing down of your bullpen than Papelbon throwing 15 pitches last night before a day off. madmike1
Ok...so that magic wand you waved over the Yankees' starters can be waved over the Boston hitters. The difference is that the yankee starters have track records that any rational person knows will result in better performances. 2/3 of the boston lineup I could've told you would be crap before the season started. Players preforming at close to their career averages isn't a magic wand.

The best stuff I saw in week one from pitchers around the league was Papelbon, Harden, Johan, King Felix and Dice. John Lackey looks poised for a big year as well. Oh and the Braves pen may be the difference maker in the NL. Bruney of the Yanks could close for half of the teams around the league.

Cmart28Coles87
The Yankees starters will be fine. The Yankees have had many seasons where they started off bad and ended up winning the division. 1998 they started off 1-4 and went on to have the best record in baseball and win the world series. Im tired of hearing all these bullsh*t assumpsions after only 6 games.

Green Jets & Ham
?? I guess Rivera isnt the best closer in history. Best there is now, best there ever was, and best there ever will be First Ballot Hall of Famer and the authentic GOAT Take a Good look, fellas .. you won't see the likes of Mariano Rivera again, unless you're looking at his "monument" BABE RUTH - LOU GEHRIG - JOE DIMAGGIO - MICKEY MANTLE - MARIANO RIVERA The Babe, The Iron Horse, The Yankee Clipper, The Mick and The Sandman The Five Yankee/Baseball Immortal Players That's what you're watching right now, you're watching an immortal, a first ballot hall of famer, a monument waiting to happen .. the Guy you will tell your Grand-children about when they gaze upon his statue and say - Grandpa, tell me about the Great Mariano Rivera? You can never put Mariano Rivera in the category of the players you just mentioned. Even the greatest closer of all time is not as important as the # 2 starting pitcher on a given team. It's impossible to put Rivera in that class of players, especially given how much the game has changed. Best closer ever? Sure, that's an easy call. One of the 5 greatest players in Yankee franchise history? No way.
Bob
Why argue? Papelbon IS good. He'll be done by the all-star break with that damaged arm of his, but right now he is dominant. Hell, I'd just love to have the Yanks in a game where they can even USE Mo. I think the Yanks starting five will be OK, too, but now would be a good time to start.
