gang_green03
2nd edition of my Jets mock draft. Changed most of the picks. Gave us a worst case scenario 1st round (IMO). Again I always try to make sure needs are filled but not ignoring value. Think I made some unique picks. Played it fairly safe when it comes to character questions this time around lol. Let me know what you think. Round 1: Justin Blalock, Texas, OG Carriker’s long gone, as are the Top 3 corners (Revis, Hall, Houston) and Spencer too. BPA for us here relative to a position of need. Great size and has the ability to play RT. Think his best bet is to play guard where I see him being a pro-bowler, but he could be a very good RT as well and should at least give it a try. Very strong and stout at the point. Great run blocker and pretty athletic. Has Mangini type intangibles. Solid in pass protention but could stand to improve in that area, his technique needs work. Should give us 3 young, great offensive lineman and put us on our way to creating a potential dominant unit in a few years. Round 2a: Ikaika Alama-Francis, Hawaii, DE Big time talent, but also very raw since he didn’t play football in high school. Has the skills to be a great 3-4 end. Has a lot of experience at the position since Hawaii runs the 3-4. Very humble and hard working, great intangibles. Has great size and can get bigger. Very quick. To give a quick idea of some of his athletic ability he posted a similar number to Dwayne Jarrett, a WR, in the 3-cone drill (7.31 to Jarrett’s 7.28) at 280lbs! Great strength and very stout against the run. Understands how to get leverage. Great pass rushing skills, but needs to work on his awareness and pass rush moves. Could be a potential steal and become a dominant DE in a year or two. Mangini had dinner with him and the Jets might have shown the most interest in him out of any other team. Might be a slight reach but he’s garnering a lot of interest from other teams and might not want to take a chance of other teams passing. Round 2b: Brian Robison, Texas, DE/OLB Already snatched up Blalock and now we go after his teammate. Showed great speed and explosiveness at the combine. Tough kid and a very good pass rusher. Great motor and intangibles. Has experience and was productive at Texas. Should be able to transition to the 3-4 OLB position and has the work ethic to get it done. The question for him comes in pass coverage because he’s not the most fluid athlete and doesn’t have a lot of experience doing this. Also, needs to improve against the run and get stronger at the point. He’s pretty good value here and could turn out to be a very good pass rusher for us. Won’t last till our 3rd and he’s the typical “Mangini guy.” Round 3: Paul Solai, Utah, NT Very strong and is a huge guy. Very stout at the point of attack and will not be pushed back. Can take on multiple blockers and you’ll need more than one guy to block this man. Great against the run and pretty athletic for his size. He is raw though and not a finished product by any means. He’s probably not gonna be much of a pass rusher. He needs to work on his stamina cause he tends to get tired. Has the potential to be a great NT and should at least provide quality depth. Good value here and this kid has a lot of potential. Some will try and compare him to Pouha but there’s a difference, Solai will come into the league at about 23 and he’s much more talented. Round 5: Le'Ron McClain, Alabama, FB I know I'll catch a lot of heat for this pick but I wanted to go offense here and this is where I feel the best value is. I initially thought RT, but I don't see the need for adding a marginal day 2 prospect here for depth, and all the talented ones that fall to day 2 because of technique issues will probably be gone by now. Then I thought WR but I don't like any of the day 2 prospects and don't feel the need to simply add depth. I almost put Yamon Figurs here to take over PR duties and grow into a potential speedy slot receiver, but we already have our project WR in Brad Smith and we don't need to take on another one at the moment. Then I looked to TE but, again, we have adequate depth and there is no need to add one here. I don't see any TEs with good potential lasting this long and Baker is solid, we don't need another fringe guy. So I finally decided on McClain. He should be able to come in and start for us immediately and he is a very good lead blocker, although he could still use improvement in that area. He's a big powerful guy, at almost 260lbs, and should be able to help us in the running game as both a blocker and short yardage back. He's also a great receiver out of the backfield and will help in the short passing game. Very good all around game and his intangibles are top notch. Jones and Washington will love running behind this guy. Some will say we already signed Barnes but it’s not like he even played that much last year and isn’t really anything special. Solid at best, but definitely not above being upgradable. This kids got some real potential. Round 6: Courtney Brown, Cal Poly, CB Not sure if he’ll still be around but would be a BPA pick and also be at a position of need. Dudes got big time potential and has the tools to be dominant. Has great size, speed, and athleticism. Problem is he didn’t play against much competition on the DI-AA level and, to compound that, teams threw away from him. He also needs to refine his technique if he wants to live up to his potential, as he’s very raw. He has some durability questions as well. Might be a year or two before he can start, but should be able to contribute in nickel packages or on special teams. Maybe Tangini will make up for missing out on his teammate Chris Gocong last year. Great value here and could turn out to be a steal. Poor man’s Antonio Cromartie? Thoughts...
CoachTsurfing
You started out real strong. I love the first two picks. Hate the next two. Love the FB pick, and hate the last pick. LOL, can't please everyone though. Nice job.
Barton
The only pick I really do not like is Solai in the 3rd rd - alittle reach there IMO. I love the McClain pick, actually I love it. They say he's like a Lorenzo Neal type. Brown has potential. If you can, I think you should stray away from 1 team mocks and do an entire 1st rd mock and see where it takes you. Good stuff. I like your mocks.
gang_green03
Appreciate the comments guys. As of now I've been to lazy to really put a good effort into one but I think I'll do an entire 1st round mock soon. Still too lazy to do explanations for all the teams though. Barton - As far as Solai, I think his value is that of a fringe 1st day pick. I think he's more of a 4th rounder but I think he'd be worth a slight reach with our 3rd since we don't have a 4th. He's got a lot of potential if he can get his stamina and technique up. CoachTsurfing - Why don't you like the Robison pick? I think its very good value there and he could be a steal. I'm starting to like him more than Woodley. I think he's more explosive and will be a better pass rusher. Didn't think people would like the fullback pick lol. FITM
CB is in my opinion the biggest need right now. I don't think we'll make it past round 2 without drafting a cornerback.
