flgreen
Visiting hour Gay isn't the only restricted free agent visiting with the Jets today. They are also hosting Bengals offensive tackle Stacy Andrews. The 6-7, 342-pound Andrews was tendered a one-year, $1.3 million contract by the Bengals; if the Jets sign him, the Bengals would receive a second-round draft choice as compensation if they don't match the offer. It is rare for teams to host multiple visits with restricted free agents. It is possible that the Jets are deciding between making offer sheets to Gay or Andrews, or the team might simply be doing advance work for next season, when both players are scheduled for unrestricted free agency. http://www.boston.com/sports/footba...ill_be_matched/

Sperm Edwards
Andrews is listed on Cincy's depth chart as a backup right guard, backing up Bobbie Williams. Started 3 games in his career at RG (the 3 games that Williams was injured in '06) after being taken towards the end of round 4 in 2004. However, one should consider his opportunity at RT with Cincy; specifically, there's no way he was going to beat out Willie Anderson for the starting job & Williams is beefier (6'4/345) mauler and probably better-suited to guard than a guy who stands at 6'7". A 2nd-round pick is pretty expensive for a guy who, 3 years after he was drafted, has never started an NFL game at the position he'd likely fill here. Not to mention he'd require a new contract (though that we should be able to get pretty cheaply). I suppose that's part of the gamble. If we gave him like a 5-year/$6-8M contract & he worked out, it's infinitely better than what starters are getting as UFA's. But again, we lose out on a 2nd-round pick who'd be tied up for 4 years at half that amount with ~$1M up front. There's something else to consider: Cincy may take less than this. Just because he's tendered with a 2nd-rounder doesn't mean we pay a 2nd-rounder. We may get him for a 3rd. The thing is, there's no RFA tender for a 3rd-rounder; with Andrews, the non-first-round choices were a 2nd-rounder or a 4th-rounder (the round he was drafted in). So clearly they want more than a 4th, but that doesn't mean they'll only take a 2nd. Could be a 3rd; could be a 3rd & a 6th; could be a 3rd this year & a 6th next year. Lots of ways to skin a cat. CoachTsurfing
Andrews has the size, but I'm thinking if he was good he would be starting. No way I'd pay a second for him. Maybe a third but even that is stretching it. As far as Gay goes. This is a huge mistake for us if we do it. He has no track record of being a good player. I'm not saying that he won't be. But where has he shown that he warrants such a high pick. I'd pass on both of these guys. I don't mind trading picks for up and comers with good track records. 124
Andrews is one big boy and I think he'd take over at RT and Anthony Clement would take a back seat as the top back-up to both him and D'Brickashaw. You put a good RT next to Brandon Moore and he is very good.

I agree here. I wouldn't feel good about giving up a 2nd round pick for Randall Gay to be honest. This dude Andrews sounds just like what the Dr. ordered for our O-Line. SeniorFlaJet
At first I thought bringing in Gay was just to bust the pats chops a little. But with this Andrews situation now I think with the two second round picks they may be looking for someone who at least has some NFL experience as opposed to some rookie in the late second that would take time to develop. I agree with some above who would take Andrews before Gay. There must be something that Mangini and Co. see in this guy that made them take a look. This guy would be a good fit for the Jets if the price is right. But as it is the Jets have too few picks and Cincy has already lost Steinbach and is probably counting on Andrews at least for one year so i am not optimistic. Even if they were able to get him and sign him I'd still like to see the Jets draft an O-line prospect.
Ghost
His size is really good, but sometimes size is overrated. I hope we get him for like a 3rd maybe.

Even if they were able to get him and sign him I'd still like to see the Jets draft an O-line prospect. Well, Cincy does have picks of their own (though I'm sure they'd like to address their crapola defense), plus they still have Andrew Whitworth to fill in at left guard. They just locked up Levi Jones less than a year ago. Anderson is going to be 32 in July (not young, but hardly "old" for an OLman). Still have the same RG (Williams). Center's a tough call for them; Braham (now a UFA) was hurt most of the year & Ghiaciuc wasn't too good in his absence. So while Andrews doesn't play center anyway, they may be looking at Kalil who might slip to their 2nd-round pick (#49 overall). Cincy has no 3rd round pick this year, so they may very well be looking to move Andrews - a backup - for a player who could become a stater before Willie Anderson retires. But I also agree with you - even if we get him, we still need to address OG and preferably on day one.
