D'brickMangoldJets
While at work i'm hearing they are having a press conference about Imus's coments. This has gotten annoying now you are a womans basketball team that had a big year and put yourselves on the map. They have the attention of the average NY/NJ sports fan so they will obviously get more attention and hype. Every morning Imus is making fun of either the pope, Omar Minaya, Italians (which I am) But you know what? It's funny I laugh at his jokes and comedy skits. Rutgers team is taking themselves too seriously every now and then you have to laugh at yourself!!! You don't see Omar Minaya or Tony Soprano taking the podeum complaining cause it's NY part of the territory is the media hype and attention. Get over it already drama queens. Sorry had to let it out. Its either accept racist and derogatory comment in the name of art (comedy, music etc) from everyone, i.e Imus, Chris Rock, rap, rock etc) or accept it from no one. You cant cherry pick a cuprit, ,and its not excusable to say well whites can make fun of whites and blacks can make fun of blacks,,we are all in the human race. So its tolerate the comedy of whites and blacks and the music of allraces or say 'enough is enough'. Whites cant say honkey or the N word and blacks cant say Honkey or the N word. Whats good for the goose is good for the gandor.

Bugg
Imus is an old dope. But a few things- Epiphany Prince was tried but acquitted here in Brooklyn for assault in a school. The charge didn't stop Vivian Stringer from recruiting here. One of Vivian Stringer's nephews is a convicted murderer. Not that Imus made those points, but those are facts. As I've said before, the problem with big time college sports at many schools is students who are there to get an education pay the freight for athletes who pay nothing. And I write that as the cousin of an 18-year old girl who just last month got a college schoalrship to a large NY-area Division I school for basketball.Thank you, Title IX, sayeth my aunt and uncle. I've been told over and over, somehow a free college education is no big deal and how there's some great diverisity component derived from their mere presence. That's horsespit; You are either there to learn or you shouldn't be there. And if an NBA or NFL contract is the goal, stay eligible or seek some other way to get there. Spare me. I was paying loans for almost 20 years, and I'm now pouring cash into 529s for my kids. I'd note as other have you can find much worse on many rap albums about women, but nobody makes a big deal about that. Imus holds himself out as a comedian, while they hold themselves our as "real". Yet they aren't held to account. Further, for anyone in the black community to care about what an old white guy has to say about a few basketball players is a red herring. When the social pathologies in many black communties go unaddressed nor rectified-drugs, poverty, gun violence, fatherless children, abysmal educational progress-to get up in arms about this is pretty pathetic. FInally, the idea that Al Shaprton-convicted tax evader, slanderer, liar, a man vidotaped by the FBI discussing a drug deal with known mobsters, a man who once incited a nutball on 125th Street to shoot and burn down Freddys' Fashion mart by calling the Jewish owners "white interlopers" and "diamond merchants" ,a man who had to give back thousands to the Federal Election Committee when they realized he was using matching funds for vacations with his girlfriend, an all-around POS-could stand in judgment of anyone is ridiculous. If that's what we've come to, we're in bad shape. Garb
My one cent: Notice how "hoe" and "bitch" have become somewhat "acceptable" or somewhat "common" references when describing a woman? Watch MTV sometimes. Listen to some Rap music. Watch a "hip" movie. How did this happen? Why? I don't like it.

bitonti
you can't compare what Imus did to what rappers do - the difference is specificity if imus says all black women are hos that's general enough of a statement that it's protected by free speech. The consitution doesn't make it illegal to be ignorant, hateful and stupid. however if imus says those particular 12 women over there are hos that's specific and it's libelous. Personal attacks against specific parties are not protected by the first ammendment. It's verbal abuse and that's the difference.

bitonti
in the rap videos, arent the rappers specifically singin/rappin to girls in the video? and dont tell me they represent the whole? maybe but it's up to those girls to ask for an apology and act indignant - if those girls accept their insults and get paid to act in the video there's no problem. Imus never got the permission of the Rutgers Women's Basketball team to insult them, explicitly or implicitly. btw this is really more of an existing stereotype than a current problem - there was a time in the early 90s when these lyrics were prevalent but those days are gone. It probably all peaked with Dre's the Chronic. But to sit here and say Imus is ok because 2livecrew is ok is comparing apples and oranges.
