haggis
The haggis family is hitting NYC this weekend for Tartan Day! Daddy haggis will be playing soccer Friday night at Pier 40 against a bunch of numpties from Scotland around 8.30pm http://www.tartanarmynyc.com/td2007.php#fitba Saturday is where things get a wee bit tricky and I can tell that the missus is feeling a wee bit put out thinking there is no time to do anything else in New York other than wait for me to play fitba, and then meet up with my brother on Saturday to watch the parade and then go home. We are staying at the Clarion on Park Ave and so we're close to the Empire State Building. Neither me, the wife, my son or my wee daughter have ever been up there. I'm thinking of getting that done before the parade. Is it possible? Is it better to get the ESB Express Pass and avoid the lines? I think we'd be looking to do this between 8-9am on Saturday. I've seen the lines, and can't afford or deal with a 2 hour wait with kids. How long do you get to spend up there? The parade will end around 4pm I reckon and so even though my wife wants to do as much as possible while there, I just don't know what else we could do without leaving late and also dealing with a baby in tow. Suggestions? I reckon if I can get the Empire State visit hammered down, it will appease her and make my life a helluva lot less stressful. And nag free. And if you fancy tipping a few back with me, meet me and a bunch of other Scots at Botanica (47 E Houston St, at Mulberry St) around 10.30pm on Friday. Mavrik
Haggis, jealous man. Have fun on Tartan Day. BTW, Liverpool v. Chelsea in Semis. What do you think? If Chelsea hadn't been playing so flat these last couple weeks, I might talk a little bit more smack, but Liverpool is playing well and definitely turning it up a notch. Gonna be hard for Chelsea if they play like they did in the 1st half against Valencia.
Bob
Last time I was at the ESB (a long time ago), there was no limit on how long you could stay on the obsevation level. I'm jealous, too, Dave. I hope you have a great time. If you want to detour through Binghamton, NY on your way home, we've got a kilt night at McGirk's Irish Pub. I'll buy you a draft. JetFanByMarriage
I love walking around NYC late at night, especially around the Times Square area. It looks like the middle of the day no matter what time you are there. Take her to a Broadway show sat night. They are all amazing.

haggis
All great options, but remember that I will have a 10 month old daughter in tow. Late night walks and boozers are not options, unfortunately. So you reckon doing the ESB in the morning won't be hard to do? It won't eat up the entire day in lines? Bob
So you reckon doing the ESB in the morning won't be hard to do? It won't eat up the entire day in lines? I'm afraid I wouldn't say that, at all. I've always spent a lot of time in lines, there. Take the kids to FAO Schwarz instead. The wife will give you credit for a nice family activity. Those are both family fun places.

The ESB will be just a little too pricey and we risk losing the day in lines etc. If my 11 year old feels it a little too babyish, I can take him to ESPNZone at Times Square. We're then closer for the parade. Sounds like a plan.

haggis
Just got back. What a great weekend! Drive down was horrendous but after that everything was awesome. The hotel exceeded all expectations, had a wee bit of sashimi before the game which we won 4-2. The game was a lot of fun, and playing with the lighted ESB in the distance was very cool. Had a great time after the game at Botanica sinking many a pint. Saturday we made it up ESB with a perfect view (btw, I can't recommend the express pass enough. Expensive, but we made it up there in under 5mins as opposed to waiting 3+ hours normally!). Then we drove up to Central Park and had a fantastic Indian lunch buffet at Chola, met up with some old friends and saw their kids, hung out in the sun drinking Irn-Bru and watching the parade before a nice walk in Central Park, a quick dash into FAO Schwarz and then drove home, which was a helluva lot easier than driving down. Going to soak the tired old bones in the hot tub now with the missus and nice cold beer.
haggis
Here is the winning squad that beat the New York boys 4-2. I'm at the back, far right. Here is another of my wee girl, Ailsa, trying Irn-Bru for the first time! And up the Empire State:
