Be careful what you put on the internet

i'm currently involved in picking a jury for a major, major drug case in philadelphia. if you've ever done jury duty, you know the drill. go into a big room until your name is called then go to a smaller room and one by one you're brought out of the room and asked questions by the lawyers. then you either go, or you have to wait again until you finally find out if you're on the jury.

well, recently my firm initiated a protocol to research potential jurors. in the 20 minutes between getting a juror's name and questioning them, we shoot their names back to the mothership where 10 lawyers armed with computers go to work figuring out everything and anything we can find. you'd be absolutely amazed at some of the things we come up with. of course we get criminal records and stuff like that but we also get homepages, social networking site pages, everything. for instance, one guy openly discussed how he enjoyed mutilating his own body on his website and other talked about her penchant for screwing multiple partners at the same time. you should have seen her faced when we asked if she ever went by the name "lovetriangle33" (her online name, changed to protect the guilty).

for them, it got them out of jury duty but i know for a fact that employers--with more time than 20 minutes to do a thorough search--can and will dig into your virtual life before giving you a job, promoting you, or determine who to pink slip.

be careful, big brother is watching.

When i first graduated i heard that employers will look at all that stuff, so i have kept my myspace page pretty bland. That whole criminal record thing is sort of BS, does it distinguish on charges that actually stuck? I was under the impression it just showed charges, but no actual results. Maybe i'm wrong.

Yeah man, just search myspace by the names or email adress of someone and you will probably find some crazy stuff. Lots of employers are doing that now.

Most of the myspace sites i see are pretty general, just about music you like, and some personality traits. Then i'll come acrosse some chicks that are making out with other chicks, every picture has booze in it, in some form or another.

The guys are probably worse though, either they are, or are trying to be male whores, its just hilarious what stuff they will say.

Yeah, well, i opened up and put up a bunch of stories on mine, from stories during my cancer treatment, to sexual experiences, and random nights out with the guys. There is even a story about a trip to the fertility clinic I took with my mother. These are mixed in with some of my stories from porn. I just made sure i didn't use my personal email or my name when i signed up, but most people don't realize that they can be easily found on there.

I guess the Chiefs didn't Google "Herman Edwards."

I've tried to keep my facebook and myspace pages void of anything that would be detrimental to me because I've heard the same things about employers searching pages. Seeing as I'm looking for jobs right now, I would hate for something as stupid as a social networking site preventing me from getting a job I want.

thats why you should use a fake name :)

anyone who doesn't realize this **** is just stupid.

You can use your name if you aren't putting anything bad on your site. My site has a beatles background, some stuff on what music I like, and pictures of me and my dog. I'm pretty sure this won't be frowned upon.

won't be long before career coaches suggest planting a fake site in hopes that a potential employer finds it:

Interest: working hard, making money for someone else, never taking breaks, whistleblowing on colleagues that steal office supplies.

Dislikes: High pay, benefits, respect.
