Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?

Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees

By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross

Published: 15 April 2007

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.

They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.

The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers, like so many apian Mary Celestes. The vanished bees are never found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives.

The alarm was first sounded last autumn, but has now hit half of all American states. The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East Coast.

CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London's biggest bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly abandoned.

Other apiarists have recorded losses in Scotland, Wales and north-west England, but the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs insisted: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the UK."

The implications of the spread are alarming. Most of the world's crops depend on pollination by bees. Albert Einstein once said that if the bees disappeared, "man would have only four years of life left".

No one knows why it is happening. Theories involving mites, pesticides, global warming and GM crops have been proposed, but all have drawbacks.

German research has long shown that bees' behaviour changes near power lines.

Now a limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby. Dr Jochen Kuhn, who carried it out, said this could provide a "hint" to a possible cause.

Dr George Carlo, who headed a massive study by the US government and mobile phone industry of hazards from mobiles in the Nineties, said: "I am convinced the possibility is real."

The case against handsets

Evidence of dangers to people from mobile phones is increasing. But proof is still lacking, largely because many of the biggest perils, such as cancer, take decades to show up.

Most research on cancer has so far proved inconclusive. But an official Finnish study found that people who used the phones for more than 10 years were 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumour on the same side as they held the handset.

Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives.

Studies in India and the US have raised the possibility that men who use mobile phones heavily have reduced sperm counts. And, more prosaically, doctors have identified the condition of "text thumb", a form of RSI from constant texting.

Professor Sir William Stewart, who has headed two official inquiries, warned that children under eight should not use mobiles and made a series of safety recommendations, largely ignored by ministers.

the list is missing gout, impotence, Down's syndrome, flatulence, ingrown toenails, heart disease, dry skin, smegma buildup, smelly armpits, gangrene, diabetes, obesity, sinus infections, post nasal drip, sickle cell anemia, athletes foot. Damn cell phones!

Cell phones have been in widespread use since the beginning of the 90's, why has it taken 17 years for it to affect bees? Has there been any major change to cell phones in the last few years?

Maybe they hate those who use cell phones and are afraid their hive is "going hi-tech" :character0269:

How has Al Gore not jumped on this and blame it on Global Warming??? Maybe the hole in the ozone layer is allowing too much crap from outer space get into our atmosphere and its screwing the bees up...... :fighting0038:

Maybe the bees finally realized their importance in this world and are planning "bee bio-terrorism" by not pollenating our flowers for fruit.... and they want to rule the earth!!!

:fighting0002::comb::violent5::gfight:

Maybe they are tired playing second fiddle to the birds in sex talk with kids and want people to "respect them" for what they contribute... :1cry:

Maybe the Queen is a bitch and they finally had enough of her :pooh:

But, all we really know is this:

my guess is the huge amount of cellphones now as compared to years ago, there is probab;y no safe zones any longer

I could accept that cell towers and power lines could cause problems... but I highly doubt the small amount of radiation coming off of cellphones would cause widespread problems for bees.

I would really like to see a real, widespread test done to prove or disprove any of these wild theories that people come up with, and what their motives are for putting something like this on the internet.

I also really dont give a hoot about any of this nonsense, be it global warming or wacky bees... If we destroy the world, then we destroy it...

Actually, I would blame obesity on messageboards like this one...

Someone should do a study about how much time is spent on a messageboard and how much they weigh..... heck, I've gained 10 pounds since I started posting here...

makes sense, ,even the farmer rube has a cell now,,

has been looking into this since 1999, and now we are hearing about it??? If this was such a threat to us and our existense, wouldnt we have heard about it before now?

Just seems too easy to blame it on cellphones... especially if someone has an agenda against technology...

SJ, I have no problem with you or your beliefs about this... but I am very cynical when it comes to stuff like this. There are many reasons why bees are having problems, and maybe electromagnetic radiation is playing a part, but until someone does an indepth study here in the US on cellphones and bees I just dont put much weight behind this.

It just bugs the heck out of me that people too many times hear something like this and overreact to it. (Not saying you did...)

Its a nice piece of info to know and be interested in to see where it goes from here...

But, if it is a threat, where is Al Gore and his movie about the bees???

My theory is than whenever a mobile/cellphone is set to vibrate, this translates

into bee language as bzzzzzzz go sting humans bzzzzzz so a lot of angry bees

are going around attacking humans, instead of doing the bzzzzzness in the hive with

the big fat one thats the size of a small sparrow in some caes, chase you for miles them

things, and noisy too.

Don't worry, stand next to the mods and you'll like you just finished a two month hunger strike.

Has anyone ever been stung by a bee?

Has anyone ,other than one of Naomi Campbell's assistants been stung by a cell phone?

Bees Suck.Case closed

except for the fact that they pollinate the world and farmers around the world are scrambling...

bees are very important to the world, which is why the einstein quote is so true...

i wouldn't doubt it...

the fact is that electrical lines (even just the web of electricity that runs through your house), cell phones, wifi devices, etc have all been known to have an impact on the health of humans...so why wouldn't they have an effect on other animals. if the bees continue to go bye-bye, that is a bad bad sign. i have always wanted to have some of my own bees, just to help pollinate my garden and for a little honey, but after researching it over the past year and seeing all the new problems beekeepers are having, i passed and will wait to see what happens

They have this thing called Garden World (or something similar) where they sell flowers and they actually sell honey in supermarkets. What's next, will you buy a goat or some sheep because you want to mow your lawn?
