I saw United 93 the other day, and I was remembering 9-11 as it happened when i was in college. Being in the Mid-west I think it was a totally different experience since what happened was in a state most people had never been to. My family is from the Bronx, and my grandpa worked in one of the Twin Towers for years, he died two years before they came down. That is my only real tie to the situation.

I'm just curious if anyone has any stories about 9/11 they would post.

I have a pretty awesome 9/11 story. it was the year 2004 & hurricane ivan caught this island flush & stalled over us for about 20 hrs. I discovered how awesome my wife is when faced with the challenge of a real life struggle.

We lost power last night for an hour & we sat on the patio talking Ivan stories with the kids. My daughter lost it with the customs agent at miami airport when he wasn't gonna let them thru as they couldn't supply him with an address while in the u.s. Her brother helped soothe the situation.

I hadn't realised how tough it was on the kids knowing mom & dad were here & knowing the conditions & hearing about the overblown looting stories on the news.

yeah 2001. either way...

i had a friend that said she didn't give 9-11 a second thought cause she didn't know anyone from new york, and had never been to new york. Since I dind't know anyone that died, and don't go the city very often it wasn't a matter of the US getting attacked. It could have been london, and my reaction would have been the same. it was just a sh!tty thing to happen to any country.

I was in my 11th grade english class my gym teacher came in the room and said "Holy ****, someone flew 2 planes into the WTC and crashed into the pentagon" We then took out a radio and listened for like 20 minutes. They were letting people out of school if a parent came, so my mom came to get me and while walking home, in brooklyn, there was a literal snowstorm of soot and ash and debree. It was so thick you couldn't see 20 feet in front of you. It was some intense ****.

I was in History class with my friend Frank and we both remembered that our fathers had meetings around the WTC that day and luckily we were able to get in contact with them very quickly and they were still in Northern, NJ as their meetings were around Noon time. We all were outside of the school and everyone was really not knowing anything (student wise at least because we were in Middle School) and then we all had to have a parent or guardian come pick us up. My friend Matt and I went with my dads friend who came and got us and we went to watch the news and that TV did not turn off Channel 2 the rest of the day.

I know we dind't have an appreciation for the soot coming down, we only got pictures of manhattan and the surrounding area of about 2 blocks. Refresh my memory, how far is brooklyn (where you were) from where they went down?

I posted this at JI on 9/11 this past year...a brief recap of my day, I'll never forget.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll never forget, I was in the North Tower on the 26th floor.

When the plane hit the sound of the explosion was unbelievable, but the aftershock of the hit was worse. The building shook from side to side so violently that I thought it was coming down, my desk was near a window, and as I looked out I could practically see the ground head on. People fell out of their chairs, I was standing and had to hold on to my desk.

When the shaking stopped out in the distance looking through my window, I could see what at first appeared to be rocket trails, which turned out to be flaming debris shooting out and down from above. Now I am frozen, and unsure of what is happening. My next sight is burned into my memory, but it took me days to remember it, some poor sole from an upper floor falling past my window, smoldering, this is what got me moving.

As I made my way to a staircase, I got hit in the head with a ceiling tile, another thing I didn't remember until someone told me later. The desent down the stairs was orderly, there was a strange smell in the air, which I guess was the jet fuel. As I made it to the lower floors, around 5 or 6 the sprinklers were on, and water was rushing down the stairs. Finally we began to exit the stairwell, onto the mezzanine level, and at that exact moment the building began to shake violently again, this was the second plane hitting. Now I ran, but it was like a dream running in slow motion, as I head for an exit to the plaza I was stopped dead in my tracks by something huge falling from above, just outside the revolving door I was about to fo through. One second faster and I'm sure I was gone. Now I spun and ran the other way, through another revolving door that appeared safe, I sprinted to an overpass over West St. that led to the Winter Garden. A security guard on the other side screamed, "Run!" what was happening, I still had no clue, as I got closer to the guard he said we were under attack, missles or planes, he wasn't sure.

I ran towards the water, and then looked up for the first time, the sight was incredible, my first thoughts turned to the friends I had at Cantor Fitzgergerald, I worked for that firm in the past, on the upper floors of that building, including one of my best friends.

I could not stay and watch the horror unfold, people were jumping or falling, so I began walking up the West Side drive right away, I was able to make a call to my wife from a pay phone, and I told her I was OK. The South Tower came down, a sight I'll never forget, as I was a safe distance away. A few zombie like minutes later, the North Tower came down, as I was standing in front of Chelsea Piers.

My cell phone now worked and I called my wife again, she told me of the Pentagon attacks, and I told her there was no way I was going to Grand Central. I did head over towards mid town, to try a find out more info. Now at some bar in the thirties, looking for water, and info, I run into the guy that sat next to me at work. This is crazy, because we took different routes to get to that point, and we live near eachother in Westchester.

He and I walked up, and over the Third Avenue Bridge, where along the way I got hit with bird droppings, as someone said, it was good luck, and I really think it was no small miracle that I got out. In the Bronx, my brother in law picked us up on Arthur Ave.

I'll never forget my friends, neighbors, and acquaintances lost on that day. I think of them on a daily basis. I was lucky, my family was lucky, I pray for those that were not.

Now five years later, I still think of that day every single day of my life. I'm a different person now, changed forever, the wounds have not healed.

I really don't know how many miles I live from ground zero, No traffic I can get there in like 10-15 minutes, 25ish by train. I used to be able to see the towers from my roof.

That's an incredible story, honestly that is amazing. I have never heard a first hand account before, thanks so much for posting it.

Heart ripping stories JetsWin and Bugg. I can't even imagine the terror, trauma and grief.

My brother in law ( my daughters Godfather) worked for a financial services firm in one of the towers. When we were out visiting earlier in the summer, Kelly and my sister in-law went into the city and had lunch with him and got a tour of his offices. I was in mid town doing some biz so I didn't hook up with them and consequently didn't know which tower and honestly couldn't remember who he worked for. When the first report came through I did what the rest of the world did and glued myself to the TV, cried and started calling out east getting the all circuits are busy routine. My daughter was at school so I went over and pulled her out. She was a mess with worry and couldn't remember which building or firm either. My sister in-law was teaching in north Jersey so the few times we did get a call through to their house nobody was there. It was a helpless feeling. The local blood banks and hospitals were swamped with calls from people wanting to give blood or anything they could. Finally about 7:30 at night we got through to my sister in law who had to stay late at the school with kids who had parents that didn't show up.

My brother in law had changed firms August 1st, was working 10 blocks away and was fine. We were very relieved, but really it didn't make me feel that much better.

I'm sure there are lots of folks here that lost friends, family, and aquaintances. God bless you all.

That must have been horrid on that family. They were probably so happy for her closing on a house and getting a new job too.
