Looks like Alan Faneca could be on the trading block.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin plans to reach out to apparently disgruntled guard Alan Faneca.

Faneca hasn't participated in Pittsburgh's offseason program or the team's first minicamp, but Tomlin has implied his absence was excused.

John Clayton says it's "clear" that Steelers G Alan Faneca is angling to get the team to move him.

Clayton drops an interesting tidbit that Faneca actually showed up for a meeting before Pittsburgh minicamp, then left the next night. The Steelers probably won't want to pay him market value and he's hitting a contract year, so it's possible they could deal him.

Stop with the Mangini guy stuff.

I'd love to have him but he'll be too expensive. He's old and will cost at least a 1st rounder. Yes, he might have 2 or 3 good years left but I don't think the price is worth the risk. Plus he'll want a HUGE contract considering what these solid guards got in FA and him being elite.

I would love to see Faneca on the Jets. He is one of the few guards out there that I'd put on this line over Brandon Moore. If the Jets make any ability to go after him, I'd like that.

One of the few? If you mean 40-50 is a few than you're right because that's how many players are better than Moore at the position.

With two very low second round picks, we could probably use one of them to pry Faneca loose. Imagine getting Thomas Jones and Faneca just for trading down with the Skins in round two last year.

It's not that simple. Faneca obviously wants major bucks. The Steelers don't hate having the guy or anything; they just don't want to give him a blockbuster deal. Let's say he's looking for a contract in the $6M/yr range with $15M+ guaranteed. Having gone to the past 6 pro-bowls in a row I'm sure he's looking for close to that. The Steelers simply don't cough up that kind of money for players, which is the only reason he's on the trading block.

So it isn't just a late 2nd-rounder for Faneca. It's a late 2nd-rounder and whatever other player that money would have gotten us. Doesn't mean he is or isn't worth it; just that it isn't that simple.

Just like we didn't give Thomas Jones a 3rd-rounder's salary (the numerical value of the trade-down); 2nd-rounders don't get $20M contracts. Jones hopeufully is worth it.

But I don't think they're big on trading a 2nd-round draft pick away for a 31 year-old player & then give said player a mega-contract.

That definitely goes against the grain as far as the way Mangini and Tannenbaum have been doing buisness.

Thomas Jones was the exception, not the rule.

Why is everyone so quick to come up with reasons NOT to get a player who fills a HUGE need for this team?

Because its silly to call for a player without looking at the alternatives. Making quick decisions lacking in judgment (like giving up a 2nd rounder and big bucks to Justin McCaireins) are how teams put themselves in trouble. Faneca is 31 years old, will demand a large salary, and will cost us a 1st day draft pick. Are you willing to give all of this up?

Yes. He's one of the best run blockers in the NFL and fills a HUGE hole on the jets. I'd give up a 3rd for him in a second.
