FOXBOROUGH -- Trading a draft pick for a disgruntled Pro Bowl player on a losing team has worked out for the Patriots before. Running back Corey Dillon, acquired from Cincinnati for a second-round pick in 2004 , helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl.

The Patriots may be considering it. According to a report by Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, the Patriots have talked to the Oakland Raiders about wide receiver Randy Moss, offering a second-day pick.

The five-time Pro Bowl receiver wants out of Oakland and new coach Lane Kiffin and the Raiders are apparently willing to oblige him for the right price. The Patriots, according to Schefter, have interest, despite addressing the wide receiver position with three offseason additions (Wes Welker, Donte' Stallworth, and Kelley Washington) already.

"I think there are a lot of things that get talked about, a lot of things that get thrown around this time of year," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick. "I don't really have any comment on it. I certainly wouldn't comment on a player on another team in this league."

The San Francisco Chronicle reported the Raiders were looking for a first-day pick in return for the recalcitrant wide receiver who, according to published reports, has not warmed to Kiffin.

Moss had 42 catches for 553 yards and three touchdowns last season, the lowest totals of his nine-year career, and there have been questions about his effort and commitment to the game.

Moss, who has had seven 1,000-yard seasons, has career totals of 676 catches for 10,700 yards and 101 TDs , but he hasn't made much of an impact in Oakland. The Raiders, who acquired him from the Minnesota Vikings in 2005 for first- and seventh-round picks and linebacker Napoleon Harris, went 4-12 in 2005 and 2-14 last season. The 6-foot-4-inch, 210-pound Moss, the 21st pick in the 1998 draft, does come with a pretty hefty price tag. He is due base salaries of $9.75 million this season and $11.25 million in 2008.

"We've had a number of calls," Kiffin told the NFL Network. "But this day is not about Randy. It's about [No. 1 overall pick] JaMarcus Russell."

According to Fox 25 news in Boston, the Pats have a trade in place for Randy Moss.

Just heard it at 9:50am... looking for some confirmation online...

That is all.

If this is true, Darelle Revis better develop petty fast.

Raiders trade 4th-round pick for McCown, Williams

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

Determined to provide a veteran mentor for JaMarcus Russell, and to have an experienced quarterback on hand so they would not have to rush the top player selected in the 2007 draft into the lineup immediately, the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night acquired Josh McCown from the Detroit Lions.

The teams had been discussing a McCown trade for weeks, with the Raiders feeling the five-year veteran could challenge for the starting job. Oakland also added former first-round wide receiver Mike Williams, the Lions' top pick in the 2005 draft, in the swap.

The Raiders surrendered a fourth-round pick, the 105th selection overall in this weekend's draft, as compensation in the trade.

Oakland inquired about several veteran quarterbacks through Saturday's proceedings but determined that McCown, a five-year veteran with 22 starts, was the best available option. He will give the team a safety net in the event Russell, selected by the Raiders with the opening pick Saturday, is not ready to step into the starting lineup.

McCown, 27, signed a two-year contract with the Lions last spring, after spending his first four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. McCown was supposed to compete for the starting job in Detroit, but Jon Kitna won the job early in the summer and started all 16 contests. McCown did not take a snap during the 2006 season.

A former Sam Houston State standout, McCown has completed 498 of 862 passes for 5,431 yards, with 25 touchdown passes and 29 interceptions, for an efficiency rating of 72.1. He has a strong enough arm to fit into the offense that Oakland first-year head coach Lane Kiffin is installing and is a quick learner.

The Raiders will inherit the one year remaining on McCown's contract, and his scheduled base salary of $2 million for 2007. Barring an extension, McCown, who has the ability to vie for a starting job in the league, will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring. He had indicated, several weeks ago, a preference to be dealt to Oakland, given his job status with the Lions.

When the Lions chose Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton on Saturday, it gave them enough depth at the position to trade McCown to the Raiders.

Williams, 23, becomes the second of the three wide receivers chosen by Detroit between 2003-05 to bomb with the team. The Lions earlier released Charles Rogers, a first-round selection in 2003. Detroit had been shopping Williams and had in-depth discussions with several teams, including Tennessee, about a deal.

In two seasons, Williams, who battled weight problems in Detroit and was often fined for not making the limit prescribed for him by the coaches, had just 37 catches for 449 yards and two touchdowns. The former Southern Cal star played in 22 games with just six starts. The Lions chose Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson with the second overall pick Saturday, and that made Williams expendable.

Williams was an expensive first-round mistake for the Lions, whose chose him with the 10th overall pick in 2005. In two seasons, Detroit paid him nearly $10 million in bonuses and base salaries. He has four years left on his contract, which the Raiders will assume.

soon as Cindy throws a pass to Dante Stallworth Moss will become pissed off and refuse to play anymore. With all the character based stuff coming out of the Parcells group its hard to believe mumbles would go for this

Wow.

This further launches New England into getting ready to win their 4th championship in 7 seasons.

One things for sure, if the Pats don't get it done this season, Patriot fans can no longer cry about Brady's lack of play makers.

Randy Moss, Dante Stallworth, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell and Kelley Washington.

AAAAAAAAnnnnnndddd Moss is gone.

Should be interesting to see if Russell begins the year on the bench behind McCown or if he's thrown to the dogs right away.

Also should be interesting to see if Mike Williams can revive his career (not gonna happen) with Russell / McCown.

The Moss move is just crazy this team is loaded..I guess they felt the pressure of the Jets improving because there is no way I would think they would bring a Moss to their organization. Spending big money and getting questionable character guys the times are changing in NE

Im getting the feeling that belicheck wants another ring and then get out. He has abandoned his traditional Patriot method of building a team with young, cheap, heady players for expensive, big-named FA's.

Hes almost "selling his soul" to get a last ring and then hit the beaches in Cape Cod with someones wife.

This isn't the case but if the following scenario was the case I would :smilies2_puke: :

Imagine if the Jets wanted to get Moss. But they couldn't because they gave up the pick for Barlow.

as much as i like the new regime i think they were too paranoid and basically wasted picks to move up to get revis whom i thought probably wouldve been there are 17 and hall wouldve been there at 25

Steelers were taking Revis at 15 if he was there, that is why Jets were attempting to trade with teams in front of them. That being said, Hall would have still went to Cincy and Ross to NYG.

What has Randy Moss done lately? Not too much. The guy doesnt even care about football, his words.

Who has Randy Moss had to throw the ball to him? Those no-name losers also had no Offensive Line, an OLine that made Houston's look like Kansas City's before players started to retire.

Andrew Walter? Aaron Brooks? Marques Tuisasoppo? Kerry Collins?

Nobody and I mean nobody wants to play in Oakland anymore, especially after the past 5, 6 seasons. You would get disgruntled too.
