Martinez gets cortisone shot, start pushed back to Sunday

May 18, 2005

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

NEW YORK -- Pedro Martinez had a cortisone shot in his right hip and was pushed back in the New York Mets rotation to Sunday's series finale against the New York Yankees.

Martinez, who was scheduled to pitch Friday, said he had soreness in the hip during his last two starts. He was given the shot Tuesday.

Victor Zambrano will start in Martinez's place in the Subway Series opener against Kevin Brown. Kris Benson will pitch Saturday against Randy Johnson, and Martinez will face Carl Pavano on Sunday.

I said at the beginning of the season that the only reason I supported the signing of Pedro Martinez was that it gave this Mets fan a reason to at least watch the games, and I stand by that.

If he wins us some games (especially against the Yankees and within the NL East), it's just icing on the cake for me.
