Kentucky Jet
FINS BREAK FROM ROUTINE ON EVANS The Miami Dolphins have issued a statement regarding the arrest of defensive tackle Fred Evans. What's that, you say? You've heard it before? As in, for example, just a day ago, when the Bears offered up the same-old statement that says nothing about the most recent legal entanglement of defensive tackle Tank Johnson? "We are aware Tank was pulled over early Friday morning in Arizona," the Bears' official statement said. "We currently are gathering facts regarding the incident. We will withhold further comment until we have more information." The Fins have broken from the standard NFL "we do not comment on pending investigations" mantra with a more ominous message regarding Mr. Evans. "We are aware Fred Evans was arrested this morning," said coach Cam Cameron. "We will not condone this type of behavior. I assure everyone it will be dealt with seriously." A couple of weeks ago, we addressed the question of whether NFL teams could fire players who are arrested, given the terms of paragraph 11 of the standard player contract, which justifies termination of the deal "if Player has engaged in personal conduct reasonably adjudged by Club to adversely affect or reflect on Club." In this case, Evans allegedly resisted arrest with violence, and bit a cop on the hand. Though some might wail that he's entitled to the presumption of innocence, the fact that one or more of the polices who dealt with Evans signed their names to a report documenting his misdeeds provides more than enough evidence, in our view, to justify a finding by the team that Evans has engaged in personal conduct that adversely affects or reflects on the organization. Then again, so does the fact that linebacker Joey Porter punched Levi Jones in the face at a Vegas casino. But that incident caused no consternation for Cam Cameron. The difference? Porter was added to the team on Cameron's watch; Evans is a holdover from the Nicktator regime. So perhaps the statement from Cameron should be revised to read, "We will not condone this type of behavior, unless committed by a guy to whom we just chose to pay a crap load of money." Indeed, here's what the Fins said when Porter was cited for battery, "We will monitor the situation and refrain from making any further comment until we gather more information." So either the Dolphins have dramatically changed their attitude about things of this nature since March, or they simply opted not to take a hard line with Porter because to do so would have been to acknowledge that they might have erred by signing him to a contract with $20 million in guaranteed payments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
like2god
Evans is a good young player with a lot of promise, but I can't stand trouble makers. This incident goes against everything that the Dolphins were trying to accomplish by ridding the team of bad character guys like McMichael and Ricky. Evans might not be around for long. Fin Fan In Cali
If troubled Freddy wants to make this team now, he better make it right with the legal system, make it right with the Dolphins Organization, and play is butt off, or he will not make the club. like2god
Oh yeah, that really explains signing Porter:shutit: What Porter adds on the field and in the locker room is huge for the Miami defense. That doesn't mean that I wasn't very disappointed in what happened after we signed him. But you can't compare a guy who gets into a fight with another player and a guy that is so out of control that he needs to be tazered by police. Porter isn't as bad as people make him out to be, some of the things that he is "known" for are not intentional incidents on his part (the incident w/ his dogs, when he was shot during a driveby, the much written about run in with the Ravens on their team bus that by all accounts from the people involved didn't happen). He is a loud mouth and a very ****y player, no doubt about it. But the guy is also a huge presence in the locker room and he should add that much needed attitude to the 4th ranked MIami defense. edit** You can't say ****y on this board? Starts with a C and rhymes w/ hockey?
