Just bought my ps3...

Recommended Posts

Went to bestbuy and got a 40" 1080p Sony Bravia V-series, a ps3, MLB 07: The Show, and Casino Royale for 2089$. I guess the whole wait for a really good sale philosophy actually works. :)

Now, ecurb, which HDMI cord on monoprice would you reccommend? Link it here and I'll buy it. Thanks. :character0282:

This TV looks superb. Now all I need is my cable box switched for the HD one.

Buying a 1080P on a 40" screen was a waste of money, you will NEVER notice a difference. Sorry to be the one to tell you that. I hope you enjoy your ps3 anyway...or, well, in the distant future when the "true" power of the ps3 is learned.

It was cheap, has all the outlets I need, is high quality, and 1080p was just an added bonus I guess. It was a great deal, and the ps3 will mainly be used as a blu-ray player/ upscale DVD player. I already know that there's not much difference on a 40" screen, but there is still a small one. But that's not the main point of it all. The 720p TV that was the exact same as mine cost more, as this was a pretty good deal.

Is this thE tv YOU purchased? Do you notice any lag when you play PS3 ON IT? I was thinking of gettin gthe Sharp Aquos gamer TV which is sad to be optimal for gaming but if you dont have any issues with your TV this sony looks pretty sweet. And like you said THERE IS a difference in a 1080p set at this size depending on the viewing distance. You will see more clarity and image depth. Just dont sit too close to it.

Enjoy your TV.

That's my TV. I don't notice any lag at all, playing MLB 07 and Gran Turismo HD Concept. Also, I watched Casino Royale and there was no blur at all, beautiful picture. Thanks for the advice. I'd recommend this TV, with my short experience with it at least.

I just did some research on this set and was really warming up to it until I read that the max resolution this has as a PC monitor is 1400x1050. Do you use it as a monitor too? Could you confirm this?

This sucks. I may have to lean towards the sharp again.

I don't use it as a PC monitor so I don't know. Sorry, can't really help much. What's the price/specs of the Sharp TV?

They make this model in 2 sizes, 32 and 37 inches and as far as I know they are the only 2 TVs in this size range that supports 1080P and it also has a vyper drive which optimizes the set for gaming. Supposedly its a good set, it has its cons, but which HDTV right now doesnt?

I had a business trip this weekend...

Im assuming you got a cable?

Dont listen to these people either... your 1080P will display a better picture... most HD broadcasts are in 1080i right now... and having the picture progressive rather than interlaced will make a nice difference in how smooth it looks.

Alot of HD will be in 1080i until a majority of the programmers start using 1080p because the carriers(Direct, Dish...) dont want to put the new equipment in until a majority of the stuff is done in 1080p

Jetsman, that TV looks good: nice price, size, and quality. I'd say go for it. What console do you have? If so, and you have internet on either, pm me. I'll add you to my friends list.

Ecurb, I didn't get a cable yet. I was awaiting your arrival for your almighty opinion: it already seemed to prove right on the TV. *knocks on wood* Here's the link for monoprice's HDMI cables, which one do you think I should get.http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240

I'm also getting my HD cable box tommorrow. Also, what's your PSN ID thing? Friend request me at bigoo162. I have to get a headset (why don't the cheap bastards give me one with the system?)

Also, kidhuman, does the same apply to cable (iO)? If so, I guess I'll be ready when the industry adopts it.

EDIT: And aha, on to the next question: what games to get. I have The Show, but the only other games out now that seem to interest me are Resistance, Motorstorm, and Oblivion. Meh, Motorstorm is too short, I don't like that it seems to take a full clip of a gun just to kill someone in Resistance (way too fast-paced and arcadey for me), and Oblivion is a question mark as I've always been interested in RPGs but never owned any big ones like Oblivion, but I'm sure I'd love it. So, I'll probably get Oblivion, I also want to really get Forza 2 (we need 2 JN members on that game dammit, right gringo?) and then I'll be good until the Holiday season. So, then after that I'm going to get GTAIV, Halo 3, Ratchet and Clank, Mass Effect, and Bioshock, then maybe Madden, so I'll be good for like 3 years to come. :)

War, I have PS3 but I really only use online to download updates and demos. Im not a big fan of playing online, if i get into any games Ill let you know.

Both your Sony and the Sharp I mentioned looked like sweet sets, if there is a way to get a better PC resolution on the sony ill probably get that one.

Thanks

Get that one... if you want... you can get a shorter one and save a few bucks too...

There isnt much for games right now... I think Rainbow Six- Vegas comes out this week for PS3 and is supposed to have extra features that the 360 didnt get...

Tiger woods is fun...

Super rub a dub... is an awesome family friendly but addictive downloadable game...

Right now, Cable is regional as to which Sat is National. For a Cable company to switch over everything, it would cost them alot more than Sat. Cable has to have many uplink centers as too which DishNetwork lived off of 2 for years. Cable would be hard pressed for more money to switch everything out to 1080p than it would be for Sat. When all goes to HD, look for Cable prices to jump, and hopefully, the end of them forever. Cable Sucks.

Thanks for the info kidhuman, maybe in the future I'll switch back to sattelite.

Also, ecurb, thanks for the info, I'll get the 6 ft one. I guess I'll wait a while for the games, as I'm not going to lose my life in a game like Oblivion, and that's he only one that interests me. Instead, I'll go out and buy forza 2. :)

I just have a problem now with the cable: there's gray bars on the top in every type of display mode except zoom, so it's in zoom, but still some channels don't take up the full screen, they have like black bars to the left and right, so does that mean those channels only display in 4:3?

Here is a link to the PS3 summer lineup, some 360 ports and multi platform games but some exclusive gems in there as well- Warhawk, Heavenly Sword.

If you haven't played the 2 versions of Ninja Gaiden on the old XBOX I would highly recommend checking out Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3, even if you have I would still take a look. This game is extremely difficult though, not for everybody.

And yes, you must get Forza 2 asap! I'll hook you up with a gift car to get you started.

Your welcome.

The gray bar is a format on either the TV or Receiver. You have to find the right combo for it to take up the full screen. It may never happen though if you bought a widescreen TV.

I think I figured it out. The gray bars were the TV's format, and I had to change it to zoom, and then the black bars on the edges were the channels' formats as only some channels had it.

war did you have to make any changes to the TV settings (color, brightness, etc) or did you just leave it the way it is out of the box?

I just left it, I didn't see the need to, there's no problems on my end on the picture quality. Only thing I had to do was change the picture settings from wide zoom to zoom to eliminate gray bars on the top and bottom of my hd channels, but that was partly due to my cable channels. All the picture settings were fine though.

Cool. How far away from the TV do you sit? I will have a max viewing distance of 6ft, trying to figure out if Id be overpowering my room and if i should get something smaller. Dont want the TV ontop of me straining my eyes.

Thanks for your help

I sit in a range of 5-12 feet, and I have no problems with anything within that range. You should probably just make sure though when you go to buy the TV.
