J. Lewis Will Be Released Thursday

Running back Jamal Lewis will be released Thursday from the federal prison camp where he has been serving a four-month sentence, but he likely won't be able to return to the Baltimore Ravens until early August.

Lewis, who pleaded guilty in an Atlanta federal court in October to using a cell phone to facilitate a drug transaction in 2000, must complete a two-month term in a halfway house following his release. He almost certainly will fulfill that portion of the sentence in Atlanta, according to his attorney, Jerome Froelich .

Ravens officials were hopeful that Lewis would be permitted to serve the remainder of his sentence at a halfway house in Owings Mills, Md. -- which would have allowed him to participate in next month's minicamps -- but that appears highly unlikely. "The government wants him in Atlanta," Froelich said.

The Ravens will hold two full-squad minicamps next month, one beginning June 6 and the other June 13. Players will report to training camp July 31 in Westminster, Md.

"He's in great shape, great mind-set," Froelich said of Lewis, who underwent ankle surgery in January. "I think he's grown up a lot; he's had four months to look at his life."

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti , trainer Bill Tessendorf and running backs coach Matt Simon have visited Lewis at the federal prison in Pensacola, Fla., as have a handful of his teammates.

"We've had constant communication and everybody's come back just thrilled with Jamal's attitude, how he looks, how he feels about himself, and his circumstances across the board," Coach Brian Billick said last week during the team's passing camp.
