toon88
28 years ago today he died in a plane crash in Ohio. August 2, 1979. While I was only like 9 years old, I'll never forget watching my old man cry like a baby when he heard the news on TV. Like alot of Yankee fans in the late '70's, Munson was my dad's favorite player. A great career cut way too short.

Maxman
My favorite all time player Not liking the way "The Bronx is Burning" is portraying him I don't think he is being portrayed negatively or anything. He had the sit down with Jackson and pretty much said what he wanted to say. I am not flashy, I am not out on the town -- my wife and family is what I am all about. Not a bad way to be portrayed. Fran Healy claims he was there for the sitdown so since this show is basically his telling I would think that part was accurate. Now I love Nettles and I wonder if him being an advisor for the show tilted things at all.
shawn306
Munson was a grump and if he sense BS he called you out on it. Munson never a high glamour guy. The guy very simply wanted to play baseball and go home to his family. He didn't have time for the BS.
anskyruben
He was a more aggresive version of Posada. No BS . He would've punched Farnsworth in the face by now. Too bad he didn't get to play more. RIP
Kidhuman
I barely remember him playing. As a kid he and Nettles were my favorite Yankees.

Jet/BosoxFan
Ya know, its funny. When the Yankees brought in Farnsworth (a scrapper with a brawl history) all y'all Yankee fans were singing his praises, saying "Now we got someone who will throw at people and throw hard & inside" and back these devastating hitters (Like Ortiz) off the plate" While he hasnt done any of that, he remains the toughest Yankee on the roster and NOBODY especially loudmouth Posada is going to punch Kyle F in the face. Posada wouldnt even throw a punch at Pedro Martinez after he threw his 70 year-old bench coach to the ground AND threatened to throw at his head. Im no Farnsworth fan, but he has proven that he has balls.

Jet/BosoxFan
I DIDNT SAY THAT! As usual, you've missed the point and meandered off into some other direction. Farnsworth is a disrespectful jerk and not that great of a pitcher, but he is the toughest Yankee on the team right now. That is all I am saying. Posada is one of the better hitting catchers in the game, but he is a hyper-sensitive LOUDMOUTH who aint gonna be throwing punches with Kyle Farnsworth or he would be added to the lenghty list of people that Farnsworth has beaten up. Jet/BosoxFan
Watching a 20 something year old pitcher attack a 70 year old man made me laugh, it was so pathetic. Agreed. And Im a Red Sox fan and the world's foremost Yankee Hater. I wanted to punch Pedro Martinez in the face after seeing that despicable turn of events. I always liked Zim...he kinda reminded me of one of my uncles...and of everything right with baseball! Edit: Though it should be noted that Zim attacked Pedro. Re-Edit: ...Like many other Yankees SHOULD HAVE DONE. Before Kyle F, Zim was the only Yankee with balls! Where was Captain Overrated? Where was uber-pVssy Karim Garcia who received a deadly pitch before he and Porn Stache Nelson teamed up on a groundskeeper? Where was big tough bikerboy steroid freak Giambi*? Where the hell was Roger Dodger? How can anybody actually like that team??? Yeeech!

JetCane
Just an FYI Yes Network, Monday night 9:00pm Farewell to the Captain Yankees vs Orioles 8/6/79. Was that the game Bobby Murcer won for them? i was at that one. I remember the day of Thurman's tragic accident. At the time I was going out with a honey from Maryland who was a big Oriole fan (and Bert Jones of the Colts ) We were home from law school for the summer. and we always argued about the Yanks-O's rivalry, which existed at the time. But she called me when she heard about Munson and expressed her condolences. It was definitely a big bummer.
toon88
Was that the game Bobby Murcer won for them? i was at that one. yes, that was the monday game. the day of the funeral. they yanks flew back from Canton to play that night. Munson's best friend, Murcer had the game of his career, on the same day he gave the eulogy for his friend. amazing.
shawn306
Hopefully they don't edit the game. I hate when the do that. ESPN Classic had a two hour version of it a few years ago which I recorded. I'm hoping this one will be the complete game but somehow I doubt it.
BP
The best Munson moment for me was the pivotal game 3 of the 1978 ALCS against the Royals, with the series tied at 1-1 in a 5 game series. Paul Splittorf was pitching a great game for the Royals who were winning the game 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Roy White was on 1st with one out and Whitey Herhog takes out Splittirf for this guy named doug byrd who Munson used to kill. Munson hit this tremendous HR over the left centerfield 430ft sign that one hopped off the left field bleachers wall. nobody hit them that far back then. Rizzuto and White were going crazy. the Yankees won. he was a great clutch hitter.
Blackout
Munson hit .529 in the 1976 WS however he had no XBH or walks, so his line was .529/.529/.
anskyruben
Munson never wore a ridiculous "C" on his uniform unlike other lesser catchers we see today.
Jet/BosoxFan
anskykloogy makes a good point. OK, fine, he just makes a point. But at least he didnt include a hackey d*ck joke. I thought Yankee captains were supposed to be aloof, overrated, singles hitters who dont step up and defend their teammates honor from both fair and unfair public scorn and who pay strippers to date them so their homosexuality remains the worst kept secret in their Yankeeography. Get your facts straight and for the love of Pete, stop being a know-it-all, or as you would say: "A no-it-all" Zimmer didnt confront Pedro, Zimmer ran (waddled actually) right for him. Pedro then grabbed Zimmer with both hands and forcibly slammed him to the ground facefirst. Zimmer had a cut from the melee and was seen by doctors. He was the only one who apologized for the whole F'N thing and showed class when the following still owe all of us an apology: Randy Levine, Pedro Martinez, Karim Garcia, Jeff Nelson, Manny Ramirez, Roger Clemens, Whore-hey Passedballa, and Im sure there are others Im forgetting but Zimmer is the only one worthy of respect. Once again, youre wrong.

I was obviously talking about the current Yankee captain, all time leader in the Intangibles category and nothing else! There was nary a reference to Mr. Munson.
