Jetcane..whats the starting D going to look like?

Last week, the guy who is writing the practice reports listed it as:

The starting defense was DE- Moncur, DT- Hendricks, DT- Dixon, DE- Campbell, LB- McCarthy, LB- Gooden, CB- DVD, SS- Cooper, FS- Phillips, CB- Grant, NB- Wiggins. I wouldn't be surprised if McCarthy and Gooden are the starting LBs in nickel even when Sharpton is 100%, as they are the two best coverage 'backers on the team.

"DVD" is DeMarcus Van Dyke

SoonerScoop.com

Spring (Texas) Westfield three-star safety and Oklahoma commitment Herman Mitchell was fatally shot Friday night, SoonerScoop.com has confirmed with Westfield coach Corby Meekins.

Sooner recruit Herman Mitchell was fatally shot on Friday.

A spokesman for the Harris County Sherriff's Office told the Houston Chronicle that Mitchell, 17, suffered multiple wounds and died earlier this evening at Ben Taub General Hospital.

Meekins said details are still sketchy, but Mitchell was shot three times en route to Westfield's final scrimmage in Spring, Texas. Meekins left the scrimmage once he received word of the shooting and rushed to be with Mitchell at the hospital. By the time Meekins could reach the hospital, Herman had been pronounced dead.

SoonerScoop.com's calls to the public information office at the Harris County Sheriff's Department went unanswered. However, the Chronicle reported that Mitchell and another teen were fighting at the Trestles Apartments on the 14300 block of Cornerstone Village around 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. Lt. John Martin of the Harris County Sherriff's Office told the Chronicle that the alleged shooter came back a short time later after the argument with a rifle and fired multiple times.

Homicide investigators are questioning two people in custody, one of whom is thought to be the shooter.

Mitchell, who was 6-foot and 200 pounds, was one of the top recruits in the Lone Star State and an early commitment to Oklahoma. Ranked overall as the No. 63 player in Texas, Mitchell turned down offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State and Missouri to pledge to Oklahoma. He was recruited by both James Patton and Bobby Jack Wright.

"Herman was one of the hardest hitting defensive players not only in Texas, but in the entire country," Rivals.com national recruiting editor Jeremy Crabtree said.

"When he committed to Oklahoma, many people didn't realize how talented he was and how big of a get it was for Oklahoma. This is a truly tragic incident and it's never fair to see somebody's life end so tragically, especially somebody that had a bright future on the football field like Herman did."

Florida State receiver Gardner arrested

By Brent Kallestad

Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State receiver Talman Gardner was charged Monday with marijuana possession and having a concealed and loaded handgun.

The gun charge is a felony and the drug charge is a misdemeanor. The 23-year-old player was released but officials did not immediately say if he had to post bond.

Gardner has been projected as possibly a second- or third-round draft choice this month. Florida State officials, including coach Bobby Bowden, did not immediately return calls.

One of the fastest players at Florida State, Gardner caught 89 passes for 1,589 yards and 19 touchdowns during his career.

The arrest is the latest embarrassment for the university, whose football players have faced assorted legal and disciplinary problems this year.

Gardner and another former Seminole player, Malcolm Tatum, were stopped early Monday by Capitol Police. The officers had been following the players, who were driving slowly through an area of state office buildings.

Both players are no longer in school. Neither player has a listed phone number, and neither could be immediately reached.

Tatum was arrested on a warrant for civil contempt, which he resolved before being released. The 24-year-old Tatum played little last season in his senior year.

Earlier this season, former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson was charged with gambling and writing bad checks and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett was charged with receiving improper discounts on merchandise. Also, quarterback Chris Rix was suspended for the Sugar Bowl after he overslept and missed a final exam.

A star player for Florida State's national championship team was arrested and charged with soliciting an undercover policewoman for sex in Tallahassee, Fla.

Safety Derrick Gibson, projected as a leading selection in the next National Football League draft, was arrested Thursday night in the latest legal entanglement for a top Florida State athlete. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 5.

CINCINNATI -- Linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested on a domestic violence charge Friday, the first arrest of a Cincinnati Bengals' player since commissioner Roger Goodell cracked down on misconduct last month.

Nicholson already was one of nine Bengals players arrested during a nine-month span, turning the team into a prime example of player misconduct. The team had gone four months without having a player arrested.

Police in nearby Taylor Mill, Ky., arrested Nicholson after a woman called 911 on Friday afternoon to say she had been assaulted by the second-year player. He was charged with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

Goodell introduced a new conduct policy last month that stiffens penalties and holds franchises responsible when their players get into trouble.

You're right!

That was one of the weirdest things/stories in CFB in recent times.

What is your take on it, and wasnt his father a coach there, and this was an attempt at some major damage control? Whatever happened to him?

That was my junior year there. It was common knowledge around campus that he was a huge pothead. I know a few people that knew him from both high school (he went to leon high here in tallahassee) and from the team. The girl I knew that went to high school with him said he used to deal pot.

Anyways, he had just come back from a Dave Matthews Concert at Bonnaroo. The statement about him having lyme disease was BS. He had taken a combination of shrooms and acid that day and freaked out. He was doing pushups in the streets and when the cops asked him who he was, he claimed he was the "son of god". After about a week in the psych ward at Tally medical he took a leave from the team.

He wasn't really that popular on campus, but everyone pretty much had an "anyone but Chris Rix" attitude that year.

OU is loaded with Stoops players. Miami is still bogged down with Coker players. The thing that was most surprising was OU's speed, especially on defense. Swarmng to the ball, tight coverage by the CBs (on weakass WRs, but still...)

Their redshirt freshman QB looks like the real deal. He was very good.

I dont have a problem with Stoops running it up, because he owed Miami for some huge losses they pinned on OU over the years. Payback is a bitc.h.

Kirby freeman is terrible. He was pulled and Kyle Wright was put in, and he put up 10 points in three drives. Then for some reason, they put freeman back in, which was awful, and he sucked bad. Miami punted 10 times today. Did i mention that Kirby is horrible?

But the defense stunk it up today, too. They played on their heels most of the day, the CBs are horrible, and OU's offensive line controlled the LOS. The LBs were absent. Just exposed by a very good team that will contend for the NC.

Also, i think I figured out the mystery of why Kyle Wright busted at Miami.

He needs a wall of an offensive line, he needs to be able to sit back there and wait for the routes to break and find his WR. He is not good under pressure of blitzing. And Miami's OL has been about as reliable as the Jets' OL, whicch aint much, really.

Given some time, he can be a very good QB. But the book is out on him, and everyone will blitz him and take advantage of Miami's weak pass protection. Just not a good fit for him, which is a shame b/c he coulda been a decent college QB with the right team.
