ShadowJet35's Keys to Victory for Week 1 v.s. the New England Patriots (serious post)

Every week a coach pinpoints his focus on certain aspects of the game, to win.

Here are mine.

  • Defensively: We must, I repeat, WE MUST get pressure on Tom Brady, whether we rush 3 or 7, we need to get in his face. When we went into Foxboro and beat them, Tom was on his ass 3/4 of the game. When we lost to them in the playoffs, I doubt we even laid a finger on him all game long. That is a huge component in whether we lose or win this game.
  • Also, we must get a great game from Kerry Rhodes, with Moss and Stallworth, and Welker in the slot, look for the ball to go 10-15 yards per pass play, Rhodes needs to secure his part of the field as well as backup rookie starter Darrelle Revis

  • Offensively, we must be successful in the running game, watching the Patriots, if they smell blood they attack, if they realize that you can't run the ball successfully, the play fake which Chad is 2nd best at in all of the NFL, won't work successfully, and Coles' deep threat ability will be useless. TJ and LJ must combine for at least 150 yards.
  • Must convert 3rd downs, you cannot give the Patriots any momentum at any point in time, converting 3rd downs will drain the life out of Belichicken and his boys, so that must be an objective in Mangini's plans.

  • Special Teams, Justin Miller and whomever our starting Punt Returner is, needs to supply us with good field position, basically every time, one thing the Patriots DO NOT do is give up long scoring drives, which is why we need to start drives somewhere near their territory, Justin needs to bring the ball at least to the 30+ yard line per return, and our Punt Returner, needs to get at least 15-20 per return. Sounds much, but you need things like that against the Pats
  • As stated before, you cannot give the Pats any momentum, so special teams tackling must be at it's finest, you cannot give them extra yardage on kick/punt returns. Mangini needs to put his surest tacklers on Special Teams, otherwise, they get momentum, drive, score, and we lose. Kassell needs to step up and get the Special teams fired up, they are a big part of this game.

Feel Free to add anything else if you want to.

jets need to hope the Pats arent told about the new parking situation and their bus is caught in traffic on the way to the stadium and they show up 5 minutes before kickoff.

otherwise we are screwed.

You are 100 percent correct about the pressure on brady. Putting pressure on a qb creates numerous situations....turnovers, short drives, and frustration. We need to frustrate the pats and make them scared of mengenious and the jets. Why do u you think we were so close to beating the colts last year, because we put pressure on manning, same thing for the jets in foxboro during the regular season. Obviously the pats made huge adjustments to that game when it came to playoff time and brady was untouched (i still remember the play where vilma whiffed on that sack when he was going for the arm...kills me everytime). But offensivley its the same type of thing. We need to pound the rock on them. We need to run thomas jones' ass off until he cant run anymore...then just playaction. We have 2 deadly deep threat wrs and plenty of offensive weapons to take the pats right out of their gameplan from play #1.

We need to disguise blitzes and send stunts etc.

Just bringing down lineman won't do ANYTHING, Bryan Thomas needs to be in his face, Barton, Vilma, Hobson, everyone, if given the oppurtunity to blitz, MUST get into the backfield.

One thing I respect about Brady, if you blitz him, and don't get to him, it's a gauranteed first down, we MUST shed blocks and get to the ball.

1. I would agree the most important key to this game is pressure on Brady. Make him hurry his throws and hope for some bad decisions, which he's capable of.

2. The run defense can bend but not break. Let them have their yards to the 40 or so and then tighten up. If Maroney is going to look like HOF'er Jim Brown at least let's keep it to relatively meaningless yards.

3. On offense just stay away from costly mistakes and turnovers.

The Pats are the better team on paper, but the Jets can hang with them. I think turnovers will tell the story in this game. Let's see which team comes out with more intensity and plays for 60 minutes.

We can't start slow, we need to be firing on all cylinders from the kick-off. We need to score first, not play catch-up, and we are gonna need a 2-3 big plays. Basically anything that gives our team confidence and demoralizes the Pats.

But the most important thing is getting off to a good start, we can't start playing in the second half, the first half needs to be ours.

The defense and special teams will have to win this game. They are our only shot.

That makes no sense... if anything the offense will be key in the win... the Pats defense would surely be considered the weaker unit on the Pats this week... they need to take advantage of it..

To me it all comes down to one thing.

Controlling the Line of Scrimmage.

If the Jets control it they have a great shot. They have to be able to run the football, control Time of Possesion and keep Brady off the field.

If they control the line, they dictate the play.

Plain and Simple.

you can bet the jets won't control both sides of the line of scrimmage. I'm hoping the D-line can push the pats around a bit, but even that could be a reach.

I really hope i'm wrong, i really hope the Jets o-line can play above its potential and push wilfork and company back. One thing that could happen is moore and mangold being all over the linebackers, i have no faith in the Pat's backers (aside from thomas, and vrable, but even they are either a new team or getting old)

This game come down to one thing, Chad Pennington. Will he be able to perform with constant pressure. Will he make any mental mistakes. Our line is going to bend no question about it, at some point, now when that happens what is chad going to to do. If he stays calm and plays like we all know he can, We will be fine. I see a big game for our recievers. I think J Mc. might even have some huge plays. Look, seriously the game is going to be about whose team keeps thier QB standing. Vilma is going to have a huge game too....mark my words

I think the Pats will put 8 in the box (like they usually do against the Jets) and make Chad beat them.

I couldn't agree anymore. If we don't pressure Brady, you can count that as a LOSS.

As a team... Honestly, we have to do so many different things right to have a chance at beating this New England team.

We do have one advantage though... We are playing in the Meadowlands, it's week one of the season, Jet fans have been waiting for this game since the loss in the playoffs to this NE team... And I feel this Jets croud needs to be LOUD, and rock the stadium and maybe even distract Brady and the Offense at times.

-I feel we need to attack J.Green and J.Sanders on the offensive side of the ball.

-We need to contain the run... Bend but dont break, and we need to keep the Patriots rushing attack under 100 yards... Keeping them under 80 would be a dream come true.

-It would be nice to see this Jets D try and confuse this NE team all game long by playing the 3-4, 4-3, 46, dime, quarter, nickel, and just give this NE Offesne different looks at times, change it up a bit, just like we did alot of last season.

-I would love for our D Line to apply pressure on T.Brady this way we dont get killed when we send the Blitz. I look for players such as S.Ellis, D.Robertson, Hobson and B.Thomas to get after Brady early and often.

-We MUST run the ball with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, thats the only way we have a chance at beating this team this Sunday. Thomas Jones needs to be our work-horse, and Leon Washington needs to get the ball in the flats, we need Leon Washington to break 2 or 3 big gains this week to slow down this Patriots D.

-Our Defense needs to get off of the field on 3rd downs... I dont wanna see this Patriot team picking up 1st downs when we have them in a 3th and 8, 3rd and long situations.

-If Chad can dink and dunk all game to Barker, Thomas Jones, Leon Washington while picking up 4-5 yards per pass... That will only open up the middle of the field for Coles, Cotchery along with J.Mac to make plays.

-I really feel the key to this game has to be our young O-Line... Can Brick shut down J.Green? I believe so. All in all, players such as Ferguson, Clarke/Bender, Mangold, B.Moore, A.Clement with the help of C.Baker all need to turn it up a notch and proect Chad from Green, Wilfork, and Warren.

If we can rush the ball, and protect Chad from getting sacked more than 2 times this week... I think players such as Coles, Cotch, J.Mac, Leon, Thomas Jones will all beable to move the chains while making plays.

One more thing... I would be nervious about sending K.Rhodes on a blitz this week if I were Mangini... I'm sure he knows alot more about the game of football than me, lol, but the Patriots have 2 speed burners on each side in Stallworth and Moss... Brady can throw the deep ball with the best of em... WE CANT LET MOSS OR STALLOWORTH BEAT US DEEP! Our Safetys must drop back and make plays on the ball... That goes for E.Coleman aswell.

You make some really good points. And is one more, we need to play good fundamental football and no crazy forward laterals on the opponents 30 with the game on the line that is intercepted and returned for a TD....remember that one!!!

Very good analysis. One more thing. Chad can not throw dumb interceptions. Eat the ball or throw it away. This is something you did not have to even think about with Chad pre-2006, but ... let's see if he gets back to his old self this year.
