next week, Nugent should kick em DEEPER!

This is a typical Jets situation.

The media and fanbase, being morons, demand Nugent to kick his balls deeper. DEEPER is better right? Westoff has been preaching directional stuff but Nugent, being a go-getter, listens to conventional wisdom and goes all out to increase his range. Heck range is always good right? RIGHT?

all preseason the only bright spot was Nugent's beautiful kicks. Wow, awesome. This is gonna be a great year.

season opener, what happens?

NFL record breaking 108 yard return touchdown return, a game breaker by the way. The game was turned at that moment Jets fans. That was the play that basically put it away. Ellis Hobbs isn't exactly Bo Jackson for those keeping track at home.

How did this happen?

Once again, the fans know it all. Thanks fellas. I wish i had a buck for every Jets fan who thought Nugent would be great... if only he kicked it off deeper!

Maybe Kellen Clemens SHOULD start, and maybe pigs will fly over the stadium after the anthem against teh Dolphins in two weeks.

for those who care or want to learn

this is the problem, if you kick a ball that deep the returner has more time to LOOK and find a lane than if you loft a ball to the 5.

the "short" kicks from last year were actually higher in the air and the guy had to look at the ball more - thus getting a split second less to look upfield find a lane.

The Jets were the only team in the NFL last year to not have a 40+ yard return against them. This year they got screwed on opening day, because Nugent's range wasn't good enough.

What is better than zero long returns? well it depends who you ask.

Riiiiiight.....because Nugent clearly started kicking them deeper for the fans. Westhoff clearly has been chewing his ass out every game in the preseason for kicking them so deep. Jesus Bitonti, you have football knowledge but tonight you're spitting out some doozies.

Boozer answer me straight up did you ever say Nugent should kick his balls deeper? answer honestly or don't bother posting in this thread.

Westoff can't control if a player wants to improve his range in the offseason. these guys are aware of what everyone is saying' Im not blaming the fans but there should be accountability. everyne who ever wanted deeper kicks has some explaining to do.

Of course, while we may not have given up a kick more than 40 yards, we were also letting the opposition start at the 35 almost all the time. But that's not the point, the point is your ridiculous notion that he is kicking them deeper at the behest of the fans and media, regardless of what his coaches want. If Nugent's kicking them deeper, you can bet your ass Westhoff wanted him to.

So because lightning strikes & Hobbs sets the record on a lucky return we should tell Nugent not to kick the ball so deep anymore? I could see if every kick was returned for 50 yards with or without that TD, but c'mon. Unless it's kicked on a rope that never gets more than 10 yards off the ground, 9x out of 10 the returner just kneels on the ball when he catches it 8 yards deep.

Nugent should be getting touchbacks if he can. He should be doing whatever he can to increase the likelihood of no return on his kicks. This is a silly & there's nothing to debate.

first off i don't know who is to blame on this - im not addressing nugent or westoff in this thread

im addressing fans who think they know what is better or worse when it comes to football.

the players are beholden to themselves, not the coaches. If Nugent got it in his head that he needed to increase his range on kickoffs Westy isn't gonna say no, my point is this is bigger than westy it's an example of fan-wise ignorance. every poster on every site has been killing Nugent since he was drafted, every beat writer says the same thing for a year, his range is troubling - now the guy owns the wrong end of the longest return in NFL history.

things that aren't broke shouldn't be fixed.

Didn't he have one of the worst net-yards on kickoffs before this year? I mean even worse than guys who have 90-100 (or 108) yard KO return TD's averaged in. I wouldn't call that "not broke" & further, it assumes that no kick would ever be returned for a TD if Nugent hadn't kicked it 8 yards deep. Also nonsense. Eventually it happens to every team.

You're sounding like Herm after Chad & Mawae couldn't handle the shotgun, saying "I said it was risky but everyone wanted to see it," as though no one runs a shotgun formation without fumbling 20% of the snaps.

The Jets defense gave up more points last year because Nuge's kickoffs were so poor they allowed the opposing offenses to rountinely start their drives out past the 30 yard line.

bit, you're losin me here man.

To be fair, it wouldnt have mattered if it was the 20 yard line. Our Defense(aside from Thomas/Rhodes) sucked, lol.
