DonCorleone
So he takes 1/8 of BB's yearly salary which Kraft will most likely pay or make up for him and takes away a possible 1st rounder. NE is way below the cap and will have no problem finding a good player or two via free agency. Even non Jets fans are outraged by the lack of a substential suspension accompanied by a stiffer penalty to the team. I guess that too many of us had our blinders on by believing that he could be a fair and firm commissioner and that he really wanted to bring change to the league. So he comes down pretty hard on the players (a move which I think many of us were pleased about) but he lets management get away with a form of cheating which leaves many wondering just how tainted some of the games, including the playoffs and SBs actually are. This proves just how much power Kraft has in the NFL and just how weak our own owner is in this league. I will make sure that neither I nor any member of my family purchase any NFL products, including Jets stuff. I mean, If I wanted to watch the WWE, at least I would know that I watch a predetermined show. I personally think that this is a black eye to the league and to those players that really work their butts off believing that hard work can actually make a difference in the outcome of a game. He fined him the maximum the NFL is allowed. What more did you expect him to do? A 1st round pick is much more substancial a penalty than a suspension. Is it worse to lose out on a potential impact player (or 2 players if they don't make the playoffs) or trading chip, or is it worse to not be on the sidelines for a couple games? Everything would've been business as usual with a suspension except for him not being on the field on gameday. A suspension would've sounded nice but wouldn't have had as much of an impact on the team as what Goddell did.

I disagree, He could have received a large fine and just like a player on roids, he could have suspended him from all football operations for at least a 4 game period as well as the loss of the pick. I mean, he has dropped the hammer on the players right?

Belichick can still have an effect on a game even if suspended.

Sperm Edwards
Here's something to consider. Let's say BB was suspended a game. Let's say he was suspended 4 games. What if NE went 1-0 or 4-0 (or even 3-1) during that suspension period? Would NE have been appropriately damaged by his absence? I mean, for whatever his coaching abilities, it's not like this is an otherwise untalented team. They play SD (they may lose anyway even with BB), then Buf, Cin, & Clev. With Herm Edwards replacing BB they'd still win at least 2 of those 4 games. I think a suspension would have been good just as a statement. I also think it is VERY inconsistent compared to the 5 games handed to a friggin' QB coach. But it wouldn't have had as big of an impact on the Patriots' record or long-term success as a first-round pick. Personally I think it should have been exactly what Goodell handed down plus a suspension of 4 games. Even if others are "doing it" - doesn't matter; he's the one who got caught and it's turned into major national news. So while I don't agree with some that this was a slap on the wrist, I do think it should have been more - even if the "more" was only like a statement since it's unlikely even banning him for 4 games would cost NE more than 1 win (if that). uart
So... what happens to the Pat's draft pick(s) though? Does the draft just become 1 pick shorter now, or does someone get it? I can't imagine that the Players Assn. would approve of making the draft shorter by any number of picks.

I doubt it makes that much difference, the next in line would just want that money so the 1st player in the 2nd round would just want to be paid like the last player usually is in the 1st and so on. CoachTsurfing
I would have liked to see more done. But if they fined him as much as they could then that's that. But, I think after this season this incident will be addressed and next year and the next time this happens the penalty will be steeper.
tparich
I'm sure Pacman would love to pay 500k to be able to play this year.

Well that's why it should have at a minimum come with a statement from Goodell that BB has used up all the 2nd chances for the rest of the league. That the next time it will result in a permanent ban from the NFL.

Their pick is just skipped over for that round. It happens sometimes.
