EAGLES SMELL A RAT

Post wire reports

September 14, 2007 -- The headline over a picture of Bill Belichick on the back page of yesterday's Philadelphia Daily News might have said it all: "Counterfeit RING: Spy Scandal Helps Explain Birds' Super Bowl Loss."

After the Eagles lost to the Patriots, 24-21, in the 2005 Super Bowl, Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown thought the Patriots beat them with nothing but sharp offensive playcalling. Now, he's not so sure.

With spying accusations leveled this week against the Pats, Brown and some of his teammates are wondering if New England used bootleg film to its advantage.

"Do I think about it? Mmm hmmm," said Brown. "It's crazy. I just don't know how far back it goes. Something's not right about that."

Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins found the accusations troublesome.

"Now there's always going to be questions about the situation," Dawkins said yesterday. "Was it great adjustments at halftime or what?"

Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward said this week that he suspected the Patriots had some type of inside information on the Steelers before at least one of the teams' two AFC Championship games since the 2001 season.

Some Eagles said occasional signal-stealing is an accepted part of the game. But they believe what the Patriots are accused of doing crosses the football morality line because it threatens the integrity of the game.

"It's different if you're talking about recording it," Dawkins said. "What can you do if you try to signal a play in?"

Elsewhere, the Lions confirmed a Sports Illustrated report that they caught the Patriots stealing defensive signals with a camera in Foxborough last December. The SI story added that twice the Lions lost radio contact with their quarterbacks.

Also, ESPN reported that Chargers coach Norv Turner plans to lock up the team's playbooks before tomorrow's walk-through in Foxborough.

And so it begins, everybody is now suspicious of the cheaters. I would have the locker room swept for bugs or hidden cameras (maybe Bill likes to see naked men).
