Dunkin' Donuts coming to Hamburg

By FELICE E. KRYCIA

Dunkin' Donuts is looking to open a new coffee shop in the Town of Hamburg.

The location? Right next door to the Tim Horton's coffee shop on Southwestern Boulevard.

David Lutz, the owner/operator of Lutz Mobil Convenience Store at the corner of Camp Road and Southwestern Boulevard, appeared before the Town of Hamburg Planning Board last Wednesday (Sept. 5) night to discuss preliminary plans to build a Dunkin' Donuts on his property.

The plans call for a 1,300-square-foot addition to the back of the existing structure that houses Lutz's gas station and convenience store.

Along with the doughnut franchise, which would include a drive-through, the convenience store would be expanded and a car wash would be added.

Lutz said he is working with the management of Tim Horton's to see if the land between the two of them can be used somehow to help alleviate the traffic congestion problems that occur as a result of Tim Hortons very busy drive through business.

"We are working together and being good neighbors," said Lutz, who added he has notified Tim Horton's of his plans to bring Dunkin' Donuts to Hamburg.

The Planning Board has set two public hearings for the project, the project's site plan and the special use permit needed for the car wash.

The two public hearings are scheduled to be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Out of all the things that have been going on in hamburg, why would you pick dunkin donuts going in? Tim Hortons is better anyways, but Dunkin Donuts are going in all over Western NY. Plus, When was the last time you hung out there, I wouldn't call it a small town, its pretty much part of buffalo now.

Oh, wow, no wonder. Its probably alot different now. We always just thought of Hamburg, Orchard Park, all those places as part of Buffalo, since development extends that whole way without much of a stop.

Nope there's still quite a desolate stretch between Buffalo and Hamburg on RT 5. Bflo's population is about 1/2 of what it was at it's peak. Everybody's leaving. SJ was just a trend setter. ;) BTW....IMO Dunkin Donuts are better than Tim Hortons. Always seems to have more filling. Bit there's a Tim Hortons on every other corner out here it seems.

Hamburg, at this point, is an extension of Buffalo. It's still a small town, but it's not like it only has one stop light.

I loved growing up there,,it was closer to a Midwest upbringing than a East Coast type mentality..

When I left in 1964 I was a sports jock 12 year old with normal clothes and a 'gee whiz towards life' attitude..I go to Bergen County NJ and its like the Blackboard Jungle from whatr I was used to,,more toiugh guys clothes, more wise guys and a much less respectful attitude of kids toweards teachers and parents..

Uhh, I lived there until a few months ago, it is pretty much buffalo south/southwest. Its all one metro area these days. Yeah, people left the city, but the sprawl still continued outside of the city. Alot of people moved out of the downtown areas and into suburbs, which made it one big block.

Dunkin Donuts sucks, but not as much as starbucks.

I would say its still sort of that same atmosphere, especially if you drive a little south. I love it there, moving back in a few months if everything goes well.

I don't know, I don't like Buffalo or the surrounding areas much, but the rest of western new york, I love, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I have been in North Carolina, its ok, reminds me of florida in the urban areas though, and I like country areas better anyways. I'm sure I would hate jersey though.

Honestly, I would rather live downtown in the city than in suburbs. Im not a fan of subdivisions and new construction, would much rather live in a historic area. And, I still consider those urban areas.

well raleigh has a inner beltline historic area that would fit you to a tee..10 minutes from NHL arena, 20 minutes from Chapel Hill and all it has to offer sports wise

its just not a huge city,,and the country is 15 minutss out of town

Actually, I have been there :) It is a very nice city, abeit a city. I honestly just don't like being around so many people. I'm used to living over an from a city with a population over 100,000. I am currently in Pittsburgh for a temporary job, I can't wait to get out. I went back to ny for the past few days and honestly didn't want to come back here at all. I just don't like the traffic, noise, or inconvenience of living in such a densely populated area. Plus, I like the cold weather :)

The sprawl is actually heading towards Lancaster as you might know. Between buffalo and Hamburg there's still that huge area of abandoned steel mills. Right now they are starting to build those huge windmills in that area.

Yeah, abandoned steel mills, not country or undeveloped areas. That is still a developed area in my opinion.

Ahh there's where we differ. I consider it undeveloped since they've been abandoned so long. You're talking 20 years here. Bethlehem, Republic totally gone with vast acres left to rust. It's sad because our country has lost so much of our heavy industry. God forbid if we ever need to gear it back up in a hurry.

Yeah, it isn't pretty. But the brownfields are still "developed" because well, they aren't greenfields :) I would say that it isn't quite so bad as you get further from the lake. The areas are "developed" much like any other rust belt city. But I would still say the developed area envelopes it all. Its pretty much the same here in pittsburgh.

Are you from the area as well? You seem to be knowledgable on the area.

I honestly can't wait to get back, Im from the Dunkirk area.

I've lived in Cheektowaga the last 30 years (Gee has it freakin been that long?) but bought a house in the police state of Kenmore last year.

DD is the most overhyped crappy coffee in the world. Awful stuff.

I actually like it. Tim Hortons is expanding like mad out here with long lines in the morning at every location. I've always found Tim Hortons coffee to be a little too bitter for my taste but you can't argue with it's popularity out here.
